reply

Why do you care if the series was so "dull and boring"?

reply

what diferance difference dose it make?... okay fine.. I'm interested for the same reason you are interested in in "why I should cair if the series was so dul and boring". thanks for being such a waste of time but by now I have my answers...

reply

Kino isnt a girl.

reply

LOL... thx for being a straight shooter ;-)

reply

Calm down. I was asking you an honest question. I don't see why someone whose not interested in the series cares about the main characters gender. No need to respond in such a childish manner. |:

But I beg to differ with the person who said Kino isn't a girl. Kino is female. I'm actually looking at a wallpaper of Kino when she was younger:

I don't know about you gentlemen, but I think Kino is female.

kino is a girl, but for obvisous reasons(woman traveling alone) she has to make her self look like a boy. there is a an ep. that show when she first met hermes and why she went of on her travels in the first place. if the travels are real? either way it made certian that kino is a girl.

reply

Kino is a girl, there is an episode that shows how she got hermes. I found it to be funny that in the colloseum episode, some people in the show call her a he and some say she... wierd... But, yeah, girl....

reply

so dose the show get any more exciting?.... bcz that first episode is realy dry and bored the heck out of me :-p

reply

if you didnt enjoy the psychological aspect of the show, you probably will not enjoy the rest of the series. It is more like the outer limits or sliders, and not always action oriented. It def isn't for everyone, but if you like the "thinking" shows it will be worth it!

reply

I like "thinking" shows but that first ep. just seemed to go through the motions of what I'd come to expect from anime :-p It seemed to be verry "dry" like how Noir was... but I liked Noir, I don't know if I'd ever sit through it agian but anyways.... so what is the age range for Kino No Tabi anywho? almost like it's for "preteens" ...?

reply

To be honest, it really just varies episode by episode. I like the idea of the anime, and for the most part I really like the way it was done. It does have some bad episodes, that is for sure. The age range is pg, but I personally would say it is mostly a G anime. Noir was done better, in my opinion, so I agree with you!

reply

I liked Noir as a whole but there were realy manny stand-out episodes... it just seemed like one episode blurred into another LOL... but I did like it :-)

reply

Have you seen evangelion? I thought that was a pretty amazing anime! I just bought the dvd's to Raxephon to see if it is as good....

reply

yeah... I liked it till a certain point then it started to get a little repeditive near the end... and then the end... arg!... I realy think they had know idea how to end that anime, or even what they were doing. I know a series shouldn't be all about the "end" but it just felt like "come on guys, give us something" :-p

I realy liked "Haibane Renmei" and "Last Exile". Exile donsn't realy have a spectacular ending but it's more about the series as a hole.. I guess that's the way I felt about Eva. too. it just didn't hold together all that well for me :-p

reply

Yeah, I have heard alot about Last Exile. I think after I finish RaXephon and Rurouni Kenshin, I will move on to that. I heard the story is wicked good!

reply

yeah.. I was interested in watching Rurouni Kenshin but a friend of mine liked it WAY-too-much and all he would do is talk about it and referance it so much and now all I can think about it that jerk :-p ..I think he ruined it for me LOL. Some day I'll watch it though.

reply

that sucks! Kenshin is pretty sweet, I am halfway through the first season ( I know I watched alot of anime in the last three days! ) it is pretty good! It is fun!

reply

so is Himura Kenshin a girl?.... hahaha just kidding :-p he sere is girly though...

reply

exile did havbe a great ending. everything that they had worked hard for came true. although you don't know if lava and claus end up togetter. i think they do.

reply

it seems that this anime is yuri in nature?

reply

Kino is a girl.
She looks like a girl as a child in a certain episode.

reply

Back on the topic of Kino's gender, she's female as is aparant when she's young, but I think she purposley looks gender neutral to not get people to judge her, and just see her as Kino.

reply

I think she purposley looks gender neutral to not get people to judge her, and just see her as Kino

That's a quote from HaruhiPwnzLife above.

I think it's good and relieving that it is not clear of which gender Kino is in most of the film. Rather Kino's gender is NOT A QUESTION AT ALL, Kino is just Kino. Of course, in the end of the film (in Finland Kino's journey was released as a film) we see Kino's childhood as a little girl.

Judging from this thread-discussion it is not enough that Kino is Kino. Kino needs to be labeled with a gender. And to be "gendered" is to be female, as the HaruhiPwnzLife shows in the quote: If Kino looks like a girl she would be judged "as a girl" (whatever that means, at least we all know that male film-characters are rarely JUDGED BY THEIR GENDER in the same way that female characters are judged by theirs).

I think it's nice with films that refuse to categorize people according to gender-stereotypes. I would be pleased to know of more, if you have recommendations!

"so dose the show get any more exciting?.... bcz that first episode is realy dry and bored the heck out of me :-p"

Yep, the first episode was the worst one, I think. Try episode 2 and if you don't like that then drop it.

"so what is the age range for Kino No Tabi anywho? almost like it's for "preteens" ...?"

Really, there is none. My dad said it was good and so did my 8 year old sister (even though it probably wouldn't be most 8 year olds cup of tea)... Every now and then it has some pretty graphic violence, but its only 4 or 5 times out of this 13 episode series.

Somebody once told me, when they saw the birds, it made them want to go on a journey.

reply

Exactly! Gender ambiguity isn't rare in anime, but it's often been used as unfortunate slapstick (tee hee, that pretty girl you fell in love with is *actually* a boy! -see Steins;Gate, Comte of Monte Christo, etc., etc., ad nauseam). However, there are people who fit into both, neither, or even other gender categories, and --surprise, surprise!-- life goes on as normal. The great thing about this anime is that no other character seems to make a big deal over discovering what is Kino's *real* gender; Kino is Kino and that's that. I wish more people had that mentality in real life!

In Japanese, the "I" pronoun is gendered ("boku wa" is male and "watashi wa" is female [I'm probably most definitely spelling this wrong!]). Kino is referred to with both masculine and feminine pronouns, and I think s/he uses both to refer to him/herself (yes, Kino is biologically female, but one's assigned gender isn't necessarily the same as one's actual gender--some people are transgender or genderqueer).

There is a special episode, released as a movie but which is only half-an hour long, which covers the period between Kino leaving home and the period before s/he starts traveling as a gun-toting BAMF. The person who teaches Kino how to use a gun is in this episode, and Kino's change of appearance is explained.

There's an anime TV series and eventual film called 'Utena' which also has a gender-ambiguous main character-- it's a sort of fairy tale reconstruction where the princess meets a prince and is inspired to become a prince herself (and even rescues a damsel in distress)! 'Soul Eater,' a fantasy anime TV series, eventually features a gender-ambiguous character, Chrona. "Ouran High School Host Club" is a comedy that features two gender-nonconforming characters (an androgynous girl and her drag queen father), and a lot of cross-dressing hullabaloo ensues. For movies/TV shows that aren't Japanese: the British TV show "Skins" is pretty innovative...

How many episodes of Kino did they make?

Fortunately I never was confused because of the female voice, at least in my dvd.

reply

They made thirteen official ones, plus a half-hour "movie" called "Life Goes On." This episode explains Kino's origins more, and introduces the teacher Kino had. This episode isn't included in the DVD; I had to look for it online to see it. Apparently there was also a 12-minute OVA "prequel" episode called "the tower country" but I didn't have any luck finding this one.
