Anime like Kino's Journey

Hello....

I know basically nothing about anime.. my friend left Kino's Journey and Neon Genesis plantinum box sets at my house, and out of boredom one night, i reluctantly started watching, and found myself unable to stop until I had watched all of it... totally amazing stuff as I'm sure you all know.. now I am craving more anime that is similar and don't know what's good and what isn't [ there seems to be a lot of average to horrible anime out there...] so if anyone can reccomend stuff thats in the same league as Kino and Neon Genesis, that would be really wicked... thanks!

[oh yeah... i've seen most of studio ghibli stuff too.... i'm more looking for a series than a movie..]

Tarkovsky is the king.

You're lucky to have started with two great shows... I would check out Serial Experiments: Lain next, same director as Kino's Journey, with a similar "children and technology" themes as Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you dig it, Texhnolyze and Boogiepop Phantom seem like good next steps... if you want a funny spin on Neon Genesis check out its "sister" show, Martian Successor Nadesico, great price (get the Essential Anime 3 volume set, 2 discs in each set for around 15 bucks) and a great way to give your emotions a rest. Cowboy Bebop is a must like Pulp Fiction is a must, you may or may not think very much of it, but you can't really know anime until you see it... Hope that gets you started off in enjoyable directions...

Haibane Renmei is another good anime series that breaks the mold.

Lain has the same director as Kino's Journey? I think Yoshitoshi ABe did the artwork for Lain, and also Haibane Renmei, which people are also sugesting (with good reason). I'd check out nearly everything that ABe has been involved with, as they all have a very similar feel, even if the stories vary a lot.

I would go for Haibane-Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain. Boogiepop Phantom is kinda the same too, but not as good as Kino, Haibane and Lain if you ask me.

full metal alchemist.

ats is right. Full metal alchemist the best. But you also check out "Gunslinger Girl". It's one of my faves even the story sounds crude.

Kino's journey is, although somewhat straightforward, it presents a lot of interesting ideas. Serial Experiments Lain ( is a show that as a few interesting ideas, but it goes out of it's way to disorient and confuse the viewer, almost to compensate for the fact that the ideas in a show that is primarily philosophical are interesting, but few and far between. The fact is there is absolutely no other show out there like Evangelion or Kino's Journey (my two favorite animes) and pretty much if youre looking for something similar, you'll be disappointed. The closest thing to Kino's Journey in my opinion is an american animated show called Aeon Flux (dont let the Charelize Theron movie scare you away) it's a thought provoking series with a similar format to kino's journey in that it's a new story each time with a new subject presenting a new idea.. If you're looking for other simply excellent anime, look into a director named Satoshi Kon. To date, everything he's directed has been excellent. Also check out Cowboy Bebop. Yeah everybody loves it, but it's a great action oriented series that deserves all the credit it gets.

You may not like it but... Maybe you should give Eat-Man and Eat-Man 98 a try.

I found Kino's Journey to remind me immensley of Mushishi, which is only available by fansub, but an excellent anime. It's similar to Kino's Journey in it's episodic nauture, about a traveler; it's just, in Mushishi, the main character is a traveling Mushishi (mushi [supernatrual spirit-like thing] hunter) and about his experinces hunting mushi. It has some themes on humanity at times, like Kino's Journey.

I suggest Mushishi, but it's only available in fansub form ATM. If you want to have a free copy of the series without the use of P2P or Bittorrent, PM me for a site that carries it.

Trigun is the best anime series that I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot.

It's about one man's journey to find the elusive mayfly of love. While he's got a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on his head.

I kow it sounds cliche, but Cowboy Bebop is the best anime I've seen. It doesn't have the best plot or anything, but it has great characters and a superior quality.

Mushishi. It's better then Kino to me.

Evangelion is the greatest. If you're interested in similarly thoughtful stuff, stay away from the Cowboy Bebop type schlock. That stuff can be fun, but it's very different from these types of shows. Definitely check out Serial Experiments Lain. The Patlabor films are about police mechs, but have a dreamy atmosphere and focus on philosophical and political issues. Haven't seen the OVA, but I assume it's as good. Night on the Galactic Railroad is a beautiful older film, if you can find it. Akira is essential, although you've probably heard of it. Studio Ghibli films. Check out different stuff, see what you like.

Evangelion, while quite good through the first half of the series, totally falls off the rails at the end. It totally ruins the whole series. I have to 100% disagree there.

I agree on Lain and Akira.

Boogiepop Phantom has been at the top of my anime recommendation list for years now. Very trippy.

Studio Ghibli is a "can't miss".

reply

I have to agree with those saying Serial Experiments Lain.

I'm not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your policework there, Lou.

I highly recommend Ergo Proxy

also,
Mushishi
Ghost in the Shell
Texhnolyze
Cowboy Bebop

For an intriguing story, melancholic mood try "Now And Then, Here And There".
