'Old' Republic..?

Hmm...I just booted up the game to play it, and while getting a drink, the opening trailer played. Darth Sion says, "The Old Republic is crippled." I thought, "Huh? Why is Sion refering to it as the 'Old' Republic? In the game, it's the 'current' Republic, with a solid 4000 years to go before it falls." I guess what bugged me is that there's no reason for Sion, even in the context of his narration, to refer tothe Republic as "Old". The game series is called "Knights of The Old Republic" because the series takes place before the Galatic Empire took its place. Sion should've just said, "the Republic is crippled."
