Ok...EXPLAIN this movie

This was a boring and difficult movie, so can you guys please explain this movie for me?

Thanks...

reply

I didn't find it hard to follow at all. I haven't seen it since I saw it in theaters, so I can't remember specifics, but more or less SMG's character had inherited the memories of a woman who was killed. She solves the mystery and sets the woman's soul free.

I didn't think this movie was boring at all,and if you watch it again you'll find it's really not that difficult to follow.

reply

It's pretty straightforward, she is a reincarnation of the murder victim, whose spirit or soul was transferred into the young child at the moment of the car crash. Whilst growing up she's buried this fact until adulthood when it starts to resurface.

Please do not use the word "retard" inappropriately.
I work for the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) and I find that word offensive when used by those who do not know what it means and use it as an insult.

Thank you.

'Retard can also include people that actually liked this piece of sh!t movie...'

It can also refer to people who consider their opinions to be objective facts, and insult anyone who disagrees with them...

I just dont get how they were connected BEFORE the car crash. Why was SMG seeing from the older girls perspective when she was at the carnival?

STEPH IS THE REAL WINNER!!!

reply

they weren't connected before the car crash. at the carnival, joanna's father is talking to the hot dog guy and the guy is like, "what's wrong with her?" and the father replies that they got into a bad car wreck a month before.

reply

The carnival happened after the crash...listen to the conversation going on in the background between her father and a carnival worker....Annie was already a part of her by this time.

To thundersal25: I wish you would come to my school then, the kids there call me retarded all the time (it really doesn't bother me all that much though)

Well, I didn't really understand this movie at first but, I kind of like it now.

Why are you reading my signature?

"Only a moron would find this bleak and feeble excuse for a "thriller" engaging in any way..." Quoted from ZuBiDan Wed Jul 11 2007 13:31:19)

Only a moron with any lack of intelligence would fail to grasp an intelligent story with a well structured plot and a surprising twist. The fact this little movie was well written, directed, photographed, designed, edited, acted and scored only goes to show that you youth are lost and culturally bankrupt when it comes to being able to appreciate a decent quality movie.

You have your whole life to learn and grasp the concept of what "quality" means and I suggest you view this film again and learn from a director who knows how to tell a story..

THE RETURN doesn't contain any overpaid "A List" Stars being paid $20 Million Dollars because the project doesn't and didn't need them.. The project stands on its own as an excellent Thriller and it wouldn't surprise me if this film developed into a classic in years to come much like Roman Polanski's THE TENANT has..

Your lack of intelligence astounds me!

reply

"it wouldn't surprise me if this film developed into a classic in years to come much like Roman Polanski's THE TENANT has..."

Actually, that would surprise me greatly.

reply

I know this post is really old, but I just had to say I can't believe anyone would have this opinion of this movie. It's incredibly bad on so many levels. The story was not at all hard to follow for me, but that doesn't make it a good movie by any stretch. It's terribly written, directed, designed, edited, and especially scored ("spooky" song was not "spooky", was actually quite annoying, and WAAAYYYY overused). The acting was fine, but the actors themselves were not well directed, so their acting skills are negated. No "A List" stars? Sarah Michelle Gellar falls into the "A list", sorry. There is no way in the world this movie will ever achieve "classic" recognition. It's simply a bad movie. Age has absolutely nothing to do with being able to appreciate a decent quality movie, The Return just happens to not be one of them.

reply

I got that much out of it, but I wish they would have explained more about who "Annie's" attacker was, and why Joanna was attacked in a similar way by his coworker. Was he the reincarnation of Annie's attacker? If not, why would he try to kill Joanna over a stolen knife? Or are we to assume that all auto shop mechanics in the town of LaSalle, TX are homicidal maniacs?

reply

guys, guys! theres no point in arguing over this movie. if you liked it, then great. i personally didnt like it. it was hard to understand and pay attention to, and everytime i thought i got it, i didnt. for example: why did that guy she knew try to like rape her in that room before he got punched out? (btw, his acting when getting punched in the throat was priceless.)

When you get the choice to sit out or dance, I hope you dance.

reply

Haha, i personally thought this movie would be really good, according to the trailer. However, when i rented this movie, i didn't like it.

reply

yeah it looked good in the store. little did we know huh. lol.

When you get the choice to sit out or dance, I hope you dance.

reply

It wasn't a co-worker of Annie's attacker that tried to kill SMG's character, it was the same guy, just older.

reply

Hated this excuse for a film. Piece of Sh!t.

when annie died her soul entered joanna's body, and they co-existed within it, joanna had her memories because annie was a part of her now. annies soul could not be free until she had avenged what had been done to her. and when that happened it was freed, and joanna was all that was left. imho

i keep reading how this is a hard movie to understand and yet its not if you take your time. and that its a horrible movie. its not a horror, its a psychic thriller, and well done especially considering the fact that its an indie. i enjoyed it

the one who killed her wasnt his co-worker, it was the same man but he had aged

it looked like she stabbed him deeply in the area of the carotid artery, which would kill him very quickly, i had a friend who died in that way and she was dead almost instaneously. she wasnt stabbed, it was the result of a car accident, but that was her only injury. so it didnt appear fake to me

and people who call others derogatory names, especially ones that are offensive to most of us, because that person does or does not like a movie, should get lives, and a brain. you really should be ashamed of yourselves, any of you who would stoop to that over a movie. maybe you just didnt understand it. or maybe it wasnt your type of movie. if so, be nice or be quiet, dont invade the board with your imbecility and tactlessness. it shows only what kind of person you are. and that should embarrass you

reply

Kellypi - GREAT post. Thanks so much for taking the time to write it. You hit the nail on the head in both your analysis of the movie, and some of the earlier posters.

Obviously I'm late to the party; however, wanted to answer your question. Have you ever heard what you give out into the world comes back to you?
1. She had a prior relationship with this co-worker. When she got the sales job from the boss, he blocked her by door and says "from what I remember, you like it rough?" She rebuts him.
2. He saw her in the bar and my two theories are:
A. Maybe they had some rape-fantasy role playing in the past and he was thinking it might be a good time to do that again. I say this since while she was still trying to figure things out with Annie mingling in her mind she may have explored this.
B. She never told co-worker of any of these fantasies. But he probably knew of her cutting self and (wrongly) assumed she may be into this.

If we go along with theory that Annie was in her head we can see how she was projecting Annie's anger from an early age. It's possible that she may have inadvertently given her prior lover (said coworker) "vibes" that these actions were okay. PLEASE understand I don't agree with abuse in any manner. Only trying to explain why coworker would do this.

lol.the arguments are silly.Sure i dont see how anyone could hate the movie, but whatever. And Person far above youre right it isnt nice to say retard loosely, although i admit i use it out of habit, but i do not mean it in the since that theyre mentally ill but in the term that theyre stupid/ignorant/dumb/careless/or just doesnt know wtf is going on around them.

Also, the connection between the 2 girls has something to do with the car crash they were intogether,i didnt really get that but a reincarnation of some sort might have been what happened,b/c it looked like sarah's character had died for a brief moment. The guy who went after both women was the same person, not the reincarnate of any kind,he didnt die until the end when sarah's character stabbed him...although i thought it was fake how he died so quickly...i thought this movie was pretty good.

reply

yeah it wasn't a bad movie, id probably give it a 6.5 - 7 / 10 . I don't know how anyone found this movie hard to follow.

Simply: The accident was the cause of all the weird things that happened to the little girl and in the sequence of events of the storyline was one of the very first things that happened after the mechanic killed Annie. Yes the guy with long hair was the mechanic(murderer). Everything else is pretty straightforward.

The only thing i found a bit lame was that the killer wasn't brought into the plot until near the end,i found it kind of rushed as i never suspected Terry of being the killer and there wasn't anyone else. I hate it how movies like this need to rely on shocks, loud noises and things jumping out of the screen to keep you watching, i find them annoying, the plot to this movie could of been thicker

As I've been found to have an IQ that's too high to measure and yet I still didn't understand the movie, I'm in shocked disbelief when ordinary earthlings express dismay that others are honest enough to admit that they didn't understand the flick. Here's the thang: this movie was like that ridiculous Tom Cruise vehicle of a few years back, Vanilla Pie or something, i.e., the movie is impossible to understand because the people who made it didn't even understand it. So, y'all please quit putting on airs by pretending to easily understand the unfathomable.
P.S.: Why can't the estimable and tasty SMG find better work?

This guy gets 10 demerit points for e-posing.

Intellectuals will rarely use contractions in slang regardless of where they are making their statements. And using uncommon wording to make yourself seem educated is not proof of an IQ too hight to measure. get over yourself.

Intellectuals will seldom deign to post on the IMDB message boards, but I revel in existing as the antithesis of the axiom.

OOO...my burri...waitasecond, I haven't got a mircrowave!

Oh, and this movie was awful in every way imaginable and in some ways unimaginable.

reply

The problem to this movie is not that it was diffifult to understand rather it was slow-moving and boring altogether so it was hard to pay attention to, so it's easy to miss details here and there.

It IS pretty straight forward if you actually sit there and focus which a lot of ppl couldnt to. Also the killerès characted just randomly came out of nowhere in the last 15 mins of the movie, that was poorly done.

I personally thought it was craptastic.

reply

Only thing I didn't "get" was why this movie ever made?

With such a weak story it was in desperate need of interesting characters and instead we have a boring girl driving around a boring scenery in a boring truck for almost 90 minutes.

At no point was this movie difficult to follow in my opinion. I'm calling BS on your supposed immeasurable IQ. You have over a 300 IQ? Nope. Sorry. Here I am with my lowly 146 IQ and I had absolutely no problem following anything in the movie, save for the fact that the killer looked completely different in every way after having aged 15 years, while Terry looked exactly the same. However, I still knew it WAS the same guy because when she's looking at the picture in the gas station and asks who it is he says something to the effect of "Handsome devil, eh? That was taken some time ago."

I saw the film yester night and I understood nothing. From what I see here, everybody understood it differently.

reply

This happen because this movie has some problems, principaly because the director. Not always a movie should be well explained, sometimes is better than a movie let the things " in the air". However, I beleive this is not one of them.

I repeat what I said before in my comments about this movie, and I quote myself: "The film "The Return" despite what the fans of Sarah say is not a great movie, but is also far from being a crap as many said.".

reply

"I got that much out of it, but I wish they would have explained more about who "Annie's" attacker was,... Was he the reincarnation of Annie's attacker? If not, why would he try to kill Joanna over a stolen knife?"

Also, Annie ripped out the earring of her attacker. Older Griff, in close-ups of the ear (yes mr. director, we get it) shows it was mutilated, as if an earring was pulled off without unhooking it.

"btw, his acting when getting punched in the throat was priceless." hee, I agree.

Terrible film.

The plot was not hard to follow but it was boring and predictable with very cheesy 'jump' moments like the part with the mirror. I like Sarah Michelle Gellar and thought she was ok but the other actors were bad.

reply

yea i get the old guy being the same guy as the killer... but what about the co-worker person??

reply

Regardless whether you understand the movie or not, it still wasn't good.

So there. Please stop posting about it. SMG should try to get better parts.

Anytime a movie like this, that is NOTHIng special has this many questions as to "what is it about, anywaY?" there is something wrong with the editing, the writing or the directing.
Or a combo of all three!!
