Are you serious? This movie is not realistic AT ALL.

And I'm in high school.
This movie is garbarge and the farthest thing from reality.

reply

not necessarily. Bullying to this degree is highly unlikely, but anything can happen.

this movie is very accurate, i was bullied in high school for no reason and it made my teen years a living hell. I was on the quiet side back then and people would pick on me for no reason.

reply

accurate indeed.

reply

I agree. I'm 31 years old and high school was HELL for me, mostly because I started high school after moving from my old farm town to the city and my sense of humour is rather "awkward", so it made me a loner and an easy target. I still carry the scars. After watching this movie it really did bring back some of those painful memories. Good job from everyone who made it.

Terminator 2
The Shawshank Redemption

I completely agree with you. This movie is very, very realistic.

Harry's heart did beat for us, for all of us. It's not over.

reply

To all of you who experienced bullying...I am so sorry you were bullied. So was I. It's a very horrible experience.

reply

I'm not sure how old the people are who like this movie, maybe high school was like this years ago, but today it's never like that. Yes, Bullying exists but defiantly not to that extent, or anywhere near it. Stacy and her little clan would have had their asses kicked loooong before anything had happened that wild. and the whole thing with the IMS, songs, websites were laughable to say the least. I hope girls in middle school or even parents with young girls think high school is anything like these, because its not.

reply

I agree. The movie was pretty ridiculous with how mean they were. I mean, they were bullying her 24.7. I don't think adolescent girlz would ever be that mean all the time. Pretty lame........

I don't think this kind of stuff happen all the time but it seem as a possoblty to me. For the recode it been almost four years since I finsh school so may be it has change in the last few years.

reply

People are pretty mean. I've known kids in elem. school to be physically abused by the other students. And also, remember how that one girl committed suicide because she thought this guy was saying mean things about her on myspace? It turned out that the person sending her the messages on myspace was not the boy but in fact a mother who lived down the street who was mad at the girls parents! If parents are bullying kids then there sure as heck are other kids bullying them. Though this movie may have stretched the lengths some people will go, some people will come pretty darn close to bullying others that much.

reply

WTF? I wish i went to the high school you guys went to. This crap happened at my school and maybe worse. And that was 10 years ago!

reply

Same here. High school was pretty brutal. Middle school was worse.

I was bullied, trying to think back it went something like this. In UK

Primary school latter years a few kids made comments and I was picked last for PE but in generaly I wouldnt consider it bullying at that stage.

Secondary school, this is when my bullying started, however it was generally non existant out of class most of time and in some classes non existant. Also was mainly limited to a few people hassling me. However as I progressed towards the end of the 3 years more people started having pops at me. It was rarely physical stuff like been hit, mostly verbal and physical stuff liek pulling my trousers down and painting tippex on my face.

College (gcse school). It completely exploded, in my form group nothing happened, but in various classes and especially now at breaks etc. I was heavily bullied, I truanted a LOT. I would say at least 50% of the time.

Primary was years approx 8-11 years old.
Secondary 12-14
College 15-16.

The bullying was non existant outside of school, even if I met people in the street who bullied me outside of school hours they left me alone or even was friendly to me. Certian people who used to be my friend in primary school generally didnt join in but they didnt stick up for me either, they just stayed neutral.

In both secondary and college schools the teachers were non sympathetic, generally they didnt do anything. In college one day I didnt have a pen and the teacher told me to ask around the class for one and then left the room when I had to do it, been well aware almost the entire class was bullying me and my only friend in the class was off sick. Luckily a girl gave me a pen.

I almost got out of it although im not sure.

Basically one of my friends was in a gang and I think he persuaded me to let me hang out, they genuinly seemed to act as friends, never ever bullying me during this time. although I was bored hanging out with them I did it to ease my school life. But one day I refused to do stuff with them outside of school, and suddenly its like "you let us down" "you not our friend". I started hanging out with them in college also even tho they now rejected me simply because I had noone else and sat with them at lunch even tho they were mocking me as I thought better than been alone.

I am not sure at what point it went wrong, at primary school I had a fair few friends, used to hang around with at least 10 or so people. When primary school was almost ended I was out with one of those friends and we got beaten up by a gang somewhere, and his dad didnt like me, its quite possible he was told to stop hanging out with me after that. When starting secondary school as may expect people got split up and secondary school also took kids on from rougher areas, my class had 2 of my primary school friends in it, one was the one who stopped hanging out with me, and the other is who I sat with. Most people were in groups of 3 or 4. Our group was just 2. In the class it was only one group who really did most of the bullying, but it was enough to give me the reputation I had and things went on from there.

Now my view is if someone is getting bullied, it has to be nipped in the bud quickly, so when it started at my secondary school, if I did something about it early on, I may have nipped it in the bud. But I didnt. I believe once it gets bad enough and enough people get involved, its not solvable, unless a miracle happens eg. a tough gang taking the victim in and the gang protects him/her. but generally school gangs dont want weak people. I did befriend someone who had a gang (was my neighbour) but the problem was he was 2 years older than me, so after the first year of secodnary school he was gone. I only asked for his help right at the end of the first year.

One of my best friends (n a different class) also got bullied at secondary school, his parents did something about it tho. They moved to a different better area, so he got a new start, he got billied again, in his 3rd school he did ok tho and escaped it. I think a new school is the only real way to escape but it doesnt mean it wont start again, as been a new kid in a class is tough and also kids home in on nervousness and fear.

Best day of my life when I finished school, when I went back to the college to get gcse results and all kids were there, its like they all had personailty transplants, not one ill word or action done/said to me. The kids who used to bully me at lunch were talking to me as if I was there friend.

Now I am an adult its a different world. whilst bullying can exist in the workplace, from my experience its nothing as near as brutal as school bullying can be. Generally people are more mature and as such if anything does happen people are more likely to step in. I have not really been bullied since leaving school, or at least I never had anything that I consider bullying, only one guy in my first job who occasionally mocked me but was only occasional and he stopped after a few months.

Its fair to say tho my childhood experience has had an effect on my entire life, its affected my self confidence, how I am in social situations and it wrecked my grades. In primary school I was A+ on almost everything, secondary I still was doing well, was put in all the top groups. But in college it all went to crap due to the bullying, I think I managed a few C's and rest D's and E's I even had some ungraded as truanted some exams. I may have done ok in the actual exams as the intelligence was still there, but the grades also affected my coursework, most of which I missed.

If I had a guess I think bullying is probably worse now days due to the social media been existant. People with phones in class can take photos etc. of victims and it can spread around, I can imagine that sort of thing goes on now.

Incase it wasnt clear in college it was almost the entire school year bullying me, it was extremely bad. I must have had one hell of a reputation.

Honey, the kids were X 100 worse, and I went to Catholic school. Kids don't need reason. They can make one up. Rhyme your name, start a rumor, or not even say why they hate you. When my niece is old enough I hope she beats mean girls ass. She was with me the whole day after all....>.>

reply

Do you watch the news at all?

There was just a report late last year of a girl killing herself because a bunch of girls used the internet to harass the girl, by making up love letters and a fake guy (the mom of the offended girl also helped, wonderfully) that supposedly liked the girl, and making fun of her on Myspace and all this other *beep*

Rare? Probably. Unheard of? Not in the least.

Technology allows kids to do a whooole lot more bullying and more anonymously, because it's not like schools can punish kids for making websites off school grounds.

reply

I agree. These teens seem to think that because they don't see it happen in their school or don't hear about it happening elsewhere, that it doesn't happen at all or that the story is exaggerated some how. They probably don't even read or watch the news to know about it.

I've heard that story you refer to including the one girls mother helping them drive the girl to suicide... and I agree about technology nowadays allows kids/teens to do alot more bullying and in an anonymous manner. Its horrible.

Furthermore, how many school shootings need to happen before school kids "get it"? Most of these school shootings are related to bullying which led the person to go on the rampage. Bullying that went to the point of virtual insanity.

reply

No, most school shooters are not retaliating for bullying. This is a myth.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-04-13-columbine-myths_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

"These are not ordinary kids who were bullied into retaliation," psychologist Peter Langman writes in his new book, Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters. "These are not ordinary kids who played too many video games. These are not ordinary kids who just wanted to be famous. These are simply not ordinary kids. These are kids with serious psychological problems."

There is indeed some terrible, dreadful bullying that happens (the most recent example being the Phoebe Prince tragedy, may her tormentors rot in prison) but most school shootings have everything to do with personal frustration on the part of the shooter (Virginia tech, Jonesboro, Columbine, Pearl High, etc.) and nothing whatsoever to do with bullying.

The people on here who think that this movie is unrealistic is either in denial or incredibly stupid!

actually alot of that stuff happened to me, i got hate im's almost daily and i was exiled people spread rumors about me, ( i mean i was even called fat when really im as thin as a twig - it really bugs me cuz im trying to gain wieght for soccer) just because i had a fight with my x bestfriend... and yes girls are that mean, it happened last year....

reply

It wasn't even the bullying that wasn't realistic it was the reactions to it, and some of the bullying was ridiculous like the songs.

reply

Uh bullying can get to that extent, I am speaking from experience

reply

I feel like you must not know a lot about bullying if you think that high school is never like that today. Just because it doesn't happen in your school doesn't mean it doesn't happen elsewhere. Why do you think the suicide rate is so high in teenagers? People do get bullied to this extent and even worse. At least she wasn't bullied physically, but in real life people do get beaten up by their classmates every day. It HAPPENS. This movie is realistic.

reply

This kind of stuff does happen in some high school and definitely in certain clicks. Stuff like that happened to me in freakin Middle School just because I told off the "queen bee" of 5th grade. They were brutal and harrassed me constantly. Trust me, this movie isn't too far from the truth, especially with emails, etc.

reply

Not realistic? You'd be surprised.

reply

I agree. It didn't happen to me personally butI know things like this went on around my school and the neighboring schools. Its really sad. And pathetic that some parents don't realize what their children are doing behind their backs. Scary.

THANK YOU. anyone with half of a spine wouldve learned that stacey and nikki are just mean girls and they wouldve found new friends instead of being ridculously gullable. "wah, im going to swallow a bunch of pills because the popular girls dont want me at their party." oh right--its a movie. it doesnt reflect real life.

reply

You have the correct mentality about this issue and so does Emily in this movie, but there's actually some people who are just like Vanessa. Read about the Phoebe Prince incident, she killed herself earlier this year because girls she thought were her friends were bullying her at school and on the internet.

Parents need to teach their children to be able to handle criticism. Vanessa's mother failed to teach her this because she herself was bullied in school and she thought the solution was to be popular so she pushed Vanessa to be friends with Stacy, a big mistake. The correct solution is to ignore people like Stacy and find friends like Emily, which Vanessa finally does at the end of the film.

reply

maybe it didnt happen in your schools but when i was in high school's lots of people were targetted just like that girl. im ashamed to say i was even a part of some of that bullying sometimes.

youre lucky if it didnt happen in your school but i thought it was very realistic. with all the advances in technology like youtube and myspace it gets easier and easier.

in fact earlier this year a girl DID kill herself after some girls from school pretended to be a cute boy and pretended to take an interest in her and then turned on her, viciously dumping her. it was on cnn.com and it was awful.

i hope a lot of parents see this movie.

reply

but when i was in high school's lots of people were targetted just like that girl.

same with me. People in high school made fun of me because i wasn't that pretty back then, if only they can see how pretty i turned out. :)

reply

I didn't find it to be very realistic either. I graduated from high school a few months before this movie first aired and I have to say that it was nothing like what I experienced. Nobody was that petty and ridiculous. Like someone said before, those girls would have gotten their asses kicked a long time ago. Yes, there are bullies in high school but they have lives. They don't spend all of their free time coming up with new was to harass people. Very unrealistic.

reply

um everybodys saying that they were in highschool but it says that the girls were in 8th grade...

H.A.M.

reply

okay im in highschool, and 8th grade was not that long ago, and even in 8th grade things like does not happen. Everyone is mentioning things about the INTERNET. Yeah, internet is different. Online Bullying may exist, but NO WHERE to the extreme that Vanessa experienced, even for online bullying. And online bullying is completly different, your able to block people on pretty much every website. Sometimes I feel like it's the person whose being bullied fault for being so careless on the internet. If someone is being mean, block them, its pretty easy. Stacy and her little clan would have been @ the lowest of the social chain and gotten their asses laughed out of school. I mean literally, people would laugh at them. I can't think of one person in my school of 2,000 that would do anything like what Stacy did. Trust me when I say its completly unrealistic to call a girl a whore for talking to another guy, or make a rap (I literally cried laugihng through that scene) I hope kids and parents think this is an "accurate portrayl" because its no where near it.

reply

You know, it's a film.. It's going to be to the extreme... But when I was in the 8th grade, people didn't always have the internet, and teachers were apt to ignore bullying as long as it didn't disrupt class time. It's irresponsible not to block people who are harassing you (or even annoying you) on the internet, but a girl in her place thought her friends might accept her again. Being bullied is very lonely, which is why a lot of victims of bullying fall for really stupid pranks.. Mainly just because they are so excited that they might have a friend somewhere that when someone shows them attention they forget that it might be a trick.

So I can see how someone might not shut out bullying all together. Some people might find negative attention better than being shut out once and for all.

Then, I think that's kind of stupid, but I am 24 and not 13, so my thinking processed is a decade more evolved than all of that.

Snark: it's what's for dinner.

reply

It's not unrealistic to be called a whore for speaking to a guy. I was, many times for being friends & just talking to the BF. It was bad. I was friends w/ them long before they became the BF and I wasn't going to stop talking to my friend just because a girlfriend didn't like it. They come & go.

reply

different schools have different kids with different levels of discipline.

I was bullied starting from secondary school (middle school) and it went on to college and got more severes.

This was 15-17 years ago, so no internet but the bullying started as soon as school started and right to the end. Some bullies tried to take it out of school following me home etc. The bullying was severe enough in the end to make me scared to go school and skive off. Those kids who bullied me if it was around then I am sure wouldnt have hesitated to make a website or something to embarass me. They probably would have recorded it on phone and then put on youtube or something.

I felt the movie was realistic in the way the bullying was done such as her hiding in toilets while they talk about her, losing her self confidence, making her go to a fake party, and of course pretending to be her friend. Teenage life is far more brutal than adult life emotionally, I have seen work place bullying and its nowhere near as severe as what you can get in schools. The headteacher initially turning a blind eye to it was also realistic as teachers do not like to get involved in bullying.

The unrealistic part was the way it ended when they read out the IM conversation, she had her self confidence back but I dont know if she would have been strong enough to handle it that way, I expect that been read out she should have ran off crying losing confidence again. But the film didnt show that maybe her new friend tought her to be stronger. What was really unrealistic is how the 2 girls just stood there after reading it out letting her rip into stacey and of course everyone clapping at the end. In real life a bully is harder to take down then that. Nevertherless a good movie and something that can be used to educate teachers.

Also I am male, I got a lot of vocal bullying along with some physical, apparently as this movie says girls are worse than boys when bullying so what I experienced would be worse if it was girls.

reply

This happened at my school in middle school and now I'm a senior in high school so no it is very realistic.

The state of our environment is not a political problem. It's EVERYBODY'S problem.

reply

I disagree. You may not have been bullied to this extent or witnessed it..but that doesn't mean it isnt realistic to someone else.

reply

The Online bullying is definitely an exaggeration. None of those girls could have possibly created such a sophisticated website for a bad hair day with their knowledge of computers. Those girls don't know HTML.

please people at my school make websites all the time. We even have a whole class devoted to learning HTML.

your mom, rated e for everyone

reply

You don't need to know HTML anymore to make a crappy webpage like the one they showed in the movie. They make so many easy learning free sites that a monkey could make a website within an hour. Not to mention HTML isn't that difficult to learn. I taught it to myself back when I was in high school and I could have easily made that webpage at that age.

And I've seen plenty of websites called "I hate so-and-so" or "such-and-such is whore" that are aimed at high schoolers. Not to mention you can easily make a mock myspace to tease someone.
