who was the original nick ganguli?

i was watching the dvd special features, the director talked about how kal penn wrote her a passionate letter and wanted to meet her, she said she told him nick was already casted but would meet with him anyway.......they met, she said she blew him away, so they ditched the other guy and casted kal, just wondering who the other guy was.

I found this on the Nirali magazine site... Thus:

Before Penn, Nair was considering casting Bollywood heartthrob Abhishek Bachchan.

Good thing Kal Penn got the role, it might not have been as big in the US among non-indian people if the other guy had gotten it. More people know who Kal Penn is.

This is for Allah... and it's going way out there sucka...

reply

I don't know the other guy but Kal Penn was terrific. And I've never even seen Kal Penn before, since stoner comedies generally aren't my thing.

reply

Van Wilder is not a stoner comedy.. it's a state of mind..

If you say so.

I see from the threads this is a minority opinion, but I would have preferred the other guy, whoever he was. I did not detect the subtle shadings in Penn's performance others have noted. To me, his expression perpetually conveyed a sense of superiority--he just seemed constantly on the verge of sneering.
