A great movie until... (SPOILERS!!!)

Speaking only for myself, I think this would've been a terrific film if it had ended with the scene in which the boy is standing at the bathroom sink, looking at his reflection through the steam coming from the hot-water tap (which would've made this about a 1:35 movie). Everything after that seemed completely beside the point and indeed a little self-conceited.

Once we know that the thing these people have been working toward and carrying in their hearts *isn't* going to happen, the rest of how "they" move forward from there isn't really any of our business. We can paint the futures of these characters in from there, but to have it told to us is self-indulgent. The story was about what these characters were pining to accomplish, and once it was impossible, that's the story.

I know I'm going to get carpet-bombed for saying all of that, but I'm struck by how many movies these days don't seem to know what they're really about, and (by that measure) when they're over.

I think that you're right about the film dropping off, but not necessarily why. Journey From the Fall was directed toward an audience whose life is primarily conceived from the struggle after coming to America, thus "Journey from the Fall". I mean you can imagine everything I'd say after that concerning the supposed relevance of it.

It just wasn't pulled off terribly well
