OMG, the guy named Long can't speak clearly

I swear the main actor, the one on the poster, doesn't know how to speak clearly at all. What wrong with his voice? I have hard time to understand what he is saying throughout the whole movie. I have to read the English subtitles in order to understand him. I have no problem with other actors/actresses. Everyone else speaks normal and clearly.
A little boy named Lai also doesn't speak very clearly but not as bad as Long. What was the director thinking?

reply

I agree with you 100% percent. I'm very very fluent in Vietnamese and I can't understand what he was saying half of the time.

reply

This is an very well done movie, but I just couldn't understand Long, I thought he was an pretty good actor but it seems you just couldn't understand him.

reply

I agree, I was wondering if I was the only one that couldn't understand him.
Good actor, but really hard to understand.
My mom couldn't understand him either lol

reply

i was wondering why he didn't pronounce as clearly as the others. i had such a hard time understanding him too.

reply

I've heard him in interviews. He speaks fine...

I guess it's just got to do with his character. I haven't seen it yet. But maybe his character is from a region in Vietnam that has a different accent.

Hating me won't make you any more beautiful.

reply

Ah so I was not alone. I just said that to my parents that he totally ruined the movie. My mom could NOT understand a word he said and she can't read English subs either :) I should not have anything to do with his character from a region in VN with a different accent. Kieu Chinh played the character of his mother. She spoke with a normal Hanoian accent, so the character must have the same. A lot of people moved from North Vietnam to Saigon in 1954. Their children were born in Saigon but never completely lost the Northerner accent they inherit from their parents. I am one of them.

You're not alone. I can hardly hear his dialog. I think it's because he's over-acting it. Most of his dialogs are either screaming or mumbling.

reply

oh.. i think it's his southern accent, because he and the boy were pretty much the only ones i understood the best, hihihi. i could say we pretty much have the same accent.
you guys speak the northern accent?

reply

i think it might be the accent. i understood him fine...

reply

Dudes,

Sorry, Its not accent. The guys screaming and mumbling in most part that just make it difficult to understand. I turned up the volume but finally gave up and read the subtitles.

reply

I know him personally and its his character, I can understand him fine.

reply

It's been a long time since I've seen this movie but I understand it just fine. I don't think it was that he wasn't clear. It may just be the difference between northern accents and southern accents in Vietnam as some have suggested.

My mother was from the south while my father was from the north so I can somewhat pick up both.

reply

I could heard him well, maybe your Vietnamese isn't good enough? His voice mix between Vietnamese voice 1954 and English-Vietnamese.
