could someone please explain to me what happened with the pirate boat. i think maybe the movie delibrately didn't explain it and left it at "a very lucky thing that saved us"... but the grandmother was seperated from the mom and kid no? and was the mother supposedly raped?
shareThe grandmother wasn't separated from Mai (the mother) and Lai (the son). The pirates only took the young girls (like Miss Phuong).
I don't think Mai was raped, but in all the commotion she was horribly burned (by hot water that was meant for one of the pirates).
It's unclear how Miss Phuong eventually made her way from the pirate boat to California.
yes, I kept on thinking about that, how Phuong reached California. Seems like they did not want to show what happened to her.
share So this is probably a real stretch, but I was wondering if maybe the mother threw the hot water on Mai to deliberately burn her so the pirates wouldn't take her? We just finished watching the movie, and I'm not 100% sure it was the mother who threw the hot water... (and I'm too lazy to go back and double check).
Anyway, just a thought.
I assumed she was just trying to get the pirate off of Mai, and Mai got caught in the cross-fire.
