I just watched it a third time and it's really mind blowing... or rather Christian Bale's performance as Jim is... and he owns this movie, so therefore the movie is excellent! I thought it was great! Last time I saw it it took me some time of the movie to just get used to Bale talking like that since I had just seen a lot of the movies where he plays really nice characters hehe...but I still liked it alot... this time I was prepared and took much more notice and I thought it was mezmerishing! Brilliant! It's incredible how he keep shifting mood, psych and "personality" depending on the situation going from kind, loving, to crazed homeboy, to psycho, to desapir and back and thought...just brilliant! And the story is great too... really intense, thoughtful, well written and bloody "scary" in a way!

It really is an excellent, excellent film... very underrated. The whole thing works. I was expecting an overblown shoot-em-up action flick and what I got was a fairly thoughtful, intelligent character study. Truly a great movie, in time it'll likely develop the appreciation it deserves.

I honestly think this was the best American movie of the year it came out (at least of the ones I saw).

So yeah, I think it's one of the most underrated movies of the last decade.

I know many people just didn't believe Bale's character, but I don't understand why. So he's a bit of a wigger I guess... there are plenty of them in LA.

They're the same narrow-minded, type-casting morons thatcan't accept Tom Hanks as anyone but Forrest Gump, can't accept Samuel L Jackson as anyone but Jules, can't accept Bruce Willis as anyone but John McClane, can't accept Robert DeNiro as anyone but Jimmy Conway, can't accept Ellen Page as anyone but Juno and so on, and so on, and so on, and so on........ Some people just can't and won't accept certain actors playing any other roles because they seem to believe that the actor IS that character. Almost everytime someone talks about an actor being miscast in a movie, it's because they just refuse to accept the actor doing anything else and because of that ridiculously stupid mentality miss out on excellent performances and excellent movies. Off the top of my head there was one idiot that started a topic on the board for 'Road To Perdition' and said the movie was miscast with "Forrest Gump plaing a gangster" "Cool Hand Luke playing a Godfather" and "Teddy Bear Jude Law playing a psycho" despit the fact that they all delivered awesome performances, this numbskull could not appreciate the movie and it's fine performances just because he can't wrap his mind around actors playing different roles. Those people just miss out and it's there loss that they have such warped mentalities.

I really liked it. Some have criticised the Bale charecter as fragmented, almost 2 or 3 different charecters depending on if he is with his mates, at an interview or with his GF. I thought that was the most real thing about it. Having been through something completely different to the Bale charecter (drug addiction, as opposed to war) and come out the other side, I can relate to how he acts in different situations. Professional at work (but always knowing its an act...), loving-but-messed-up with the GF, spending time with the boys who think your messed-up-ness is a laugh, and doing things that shock them and you. I know its different, but I really related to the charecter...

I agree. I didn't expect to like the movie but I did. The Bale character is fragmented. He's a mentally fragmented guy. Fragmentation was the point. Bale and the rest of the cast did an excellent job.
