Was Steinbeck a McCarthyist?

In his novel, "The Grapes of Wrath," Steinbeck showed labor leaders to either avow that they were Reds or at the least, be willing to accept the title.

In the novel, "In Dubius Battle," he was even more explicit. A young man joins the Communist Party USA and together with his mentor, stir up a strike among farm laborers hoping that the workers will be killed by the owners so as to foment the Revolution.

Was this Steinbeck's way of exposing communist influence in American politics or did he really idolize these Marxists?

Steinbeck was clearly in favor of Communism and was connected to various Communist groups and organizations throughout his life.
