Should Strathairn have won the oscar?

Do you think that David Strathairn should've won the best actor oscar in 2005?

reply

he was very good but think about who won that year it was philip symour hoffman for capote and there was other competition with phoenix for walk the line

reply

Don't forget Heath Ledger from Brokeback Mountain, he probably should've won that year.

reply

heath ledger definitely was my choice to win that year but i knew he wouldn't beat phillip seymour hoffman :(

reply

It really was a great performance. It was a shame for him that there were also a lot of other strong performances that year.

reply

yeah it was a great year but my favourite will always be Joaquin Phoenix in Walk The Line

reply

There's something wrong with Walk The Line. It seems like a caricature. Does Reese even try to look anything like June? And JP doesn't seem to carry the weight of Johnny Cash. Seems like a crummy bio-pic (ala Ray) than an earnest reflection of a man's complicated life. Just my humble opinion.

I'm not a woman much less Deanna Durbin, but the old-time g me. lam-shot appeals to

My pick is Strathairn, even in a field as uncommonly good as Best Actor in 05.

I saw Strathairn, Phoenix and Hoffman in all of their Oscar-nominated roles and my personal pick would have been Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line, followed very closely by Strathairn. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was very good, but I wasn't too familiar with Capote - my parents said he sounded eerily like the real Capote. Unfortunately for Phoenix and Strathairn, they would have surely won the Oscar in any other year than that one - there was just SO much great competition up in the running that year.

HELLO !!!!

somebody was up there with them called TERRENCE HOWARD

It was a superb year for actors...I rooted for strathairn, but was pretty sure Hoffman would win...impersonating Capote is more showy than impersonating Murrow (not to take anything away from either actor)
It is not our abilities that show who we truly are...it is our choices

reply

Both actors were superb in both roles.....this was Strathairn's best role to date in my opinion..great movie with good historical content.

reply

I did not see the Oscar Award-winning performance for Capote, so I can't compare the two performances. Suffice to say, David's interpreatation (to call it an impersonation would be cheap) and the character of Murrow was spot on. However, the character, or role as it was written, did not show a great deal of emotional range; it's almost a one-note character throughout in that respect. Still, David gave a fine performance portraying a true radio/TV news icon.

Definatley deserved a nomination but i dont think it was worthy of the win. An absolutely amazing performance neverthe less.

Strathairn is a very underrated character actor which only a few circles in Hollywood appreciate. He should've won the Oscar, but he couldn't overcome the buzz of Hoffman.

I watched this film again last night for the fourth or fifth time, and every time he looked more convincing and breathed life to the tee. I personally love Hoffman as an actor...Both were equally good that year...It's really unfortunate that there is just one Oscar handed out...Of the lot, I totally include Eric Bana for Munich too. And that year, the Oscars were a total snub for both George Clooney and Spielberg. Looking at this Oscar history for several years I really gave up on this board...There have been unfair nominations and wins. They're biased and lobbied. Either way, it doesn't matter any more I guess. Tens of thousands of talented films go unnoticed because of lack of budgets. Easily one of the best films ever made and definitely best performance by David.S.
