they weren't eating them, they were desperate for blood and were literally ripping people apart to suck blood from their organs.
it reminded me of a chapter of one of anne rices vampire chronicles books, Armand has survived going into the sun and has found a guy who violently abuses his kids so armand, desperate for blood to feed and to heal, rips him apart to get every ounce of blood. squeezing his heart like a wet dish cloth, and breaking his bones to suck the bloody marrow out.
