If you really only saw the stand-up, then you did see an intentionally unfunny, awkward scene in the film. It is a truly awkward and depressing scene.
It was meant to be that way.
First of all, you need to see the rest of this movie to put this scene in perspective.
Secondly, if you don't have a feel for Brook's brand of satire by watching him for the past 30 years, then you wouldn't be expected to appreciate this film.
I cringe at the stand up routine in this film. It is intended to make the viewers cringe.
Brooks intends for us to cringe during this scene. He thrives on self deprecation. It is his signature.
But really, if you just saw this scene, there is no point in debating the film with you.
Watch the entire movie. I'm pretty sure you will still hate it; but at least we will have a level playing field from which to discuss Brooks and this film.
