Copied Story?

its definitely a revamped story of stallone's Over The Top. I know movies take inspirations from here and there but the similarities are very close. except for the robot part cause this being our time than arm wrestling which worked in the 80s.. don't go by the summary. check out the movie and see for yourself.

Not Rocky then?

reply

The whole-kid-loves-robot-who-also-loves-kid thing was done in "Iron Giant", albeit as a cartoon.

The idea of piecing a robot together from parts was also done in Iron Giant.

reply

Also, the first thing I thought of when I saw the trailer for this movie months ago was the old kids game "Rock-em Sock-em Robots".

The toy robots are under human control and they are boxers. Throw in some "Rocky" and some "Iron Giant" and you have "Real Steel". Pretty simple formula.

reply

So its Rocky+Iron Giant+Over the Top...

Name a movie that isn't a mix of 2 or 3 or more existing movies.

last time i checked this film is based off a Short Story

it said so at the beginning of the film lol

reply

It barely qualifies... some of the initial details are the same but from then on it's almost completely different.

Right, they were both based on the same thing.
"Steel", short story by Richard Matheson (1956)
"Steel", S5 E2 of The Twilight Zone (1963)
"Real Steel", movie (2011)

the premise is the same.
the presentation is executed differently, and includes homages to other similar stories.
that's about all you say.

Real Steel was a passion project for producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford, who developed the film for seven years, eventually convincing DreamWorks co-founder Steven Spielberg to get on board as an executive producer.
They came across Matheson’s original narrative while researching another project and found themselves entranced with the idea of a down-on-his-luck ex-boxer who was struggling to make his way in the new world of robot boxing.

Monford felt that our current economic conditions (and the reality that certain jobs are becoming irrelevant, forcing many to adjust and learn entirely new skills) made the main character’s plight all the more germane at this time. The film has since evolved into a hybrid sci-fi/sports movie/family drama with a more light-hearted tone.

And Matheson had this to say:

"Steven Spielberg called me and sent me a copy of the script, which as I recall is quite different from the actual film. But it was close enough to my story and I told him so, and that’s why he gave me credit where ordinarily if they purchase a story it’s peripheral credit.”

AND

"It’s very good. There was nothing I disliked. I thought Hugh Jackman was outstanding. It’s a beautiful job, Shawn Levy did a wonderful job."

So, for the record, the original author was happy with the adaptation.

So, get over yourself.

I thought the exact same thing when I saw the trailers and promos.😀 Rockum Sockum Robots!

reply

Have you watched Iron giant? The robot was from another planet that fell to earth as a whole. He wasn't pieced together from other parts he could rebuild himself and ate metal as food. It's more a story of 50's cold war paranoia than anything else. The giant is also autonomous, intelligent and in the end noble and self sacrificing. Other than a big metal guy Real Steel and The Iron Giant have very little in common.

Rocky+Iron Giant+Over the Top... + Transformers+Pacific Rim?

BWAAAAhahahahhahahahahhahaaaaaa...

No, I'm not serious. These people who try to reduce any movie to a couple other movies are idiots. Yes, there are echoes of other movies in it. So freaking what? It's not a complete rip-off of anything, and it has enough charm that most people would be pleased with it.

It's a decent movie. Much better than I expected it to be. Not fantastic, but good. And suitable for family, I think. All the violence, except for one instance, is pretty much between robots.

reply

The entire last half of the movie is Rocky. Underdog fighter, given shot at title. No way in hell he can fight the champ and last, somehow manages to fight the whole fight and just barely lose by decision so everyone loves him.

Real Steel 2, they'll rematch and Atom will win.

Real Steel 3, there will be a robot with a mohawk. :)

reply

Uh...

Seriously now... This movie purposely threw in bits and pieces of everything.

I'm surprised the Sly Stallone didn't make a cameo and slurred some incoherent jumble..

There is reference to Rocky.. There is also a reference to The Rock, the people's Champ.

And yes, there is similarities to Over the top. But, over the top was a fairly poor 80's movie about arm wrestling...

Revamped/copied yet original story 1956. Nice one :|

Yes its over the Top/Short Circuit/Rocky all rolled into one movie. And that is freaking awesome because all those movies were great. This movie even had an 80s feel to it.Good movie
SARAH PALIN. Hero of the stupid.

reply

it WAS based on "Steel" short story, they even put it in the credits, and there is a twilight zone episode based on it, and yes the movie IS awesome, i wont put short circuit in the mix, the robot is just a robot it never gains awareness or any kind of "feelings"

reply

the beauty of copying a movie like "over the top" is that hardly anyone saw it so there are not many people who can call you on it.

Nobody knows the 80's anime "Puraresu Sanshirô" ?

That's the original story I think.

reply

0_o i guess there just to many of those Japanese story about a boy and a fighter robot, but the first manga/anime that this movie reminds me is Astroboy

The original Japanese name for Astro is Atom.

I was kinda thinking Rocky, with a touch of Rocky IV thrown in. Lemkova was Ludmilla, and Mashido was Koloff. High-tech Drago vs. old-school Rocky.

Max was even yelling "Dad" instead of "Adrian". The only thing missing was Zeus saying, "There ain't gonna be no rematch. There ain't gonna be no rematch".

^This. It needed saying and you said it perfectly.

I haven't seen Over The Top but this was based on a twilight zone episode called STEEL (I'm pretty sure) in the sixties, I think. All the source material is based off of that episode. I think you'll find with any film that its ideas or the scenes in them are not completely original. How do you know Over the Top isn't a revamped version of that Twilight episode??????

I once heard there are only seven basic plots and everything is a variation on those and it seems so, especially during the last ten - twenty years. Nothing original every shows up on the screen. Like TV, everyone copies everyone else and you end up with a big, melted down mess of crap.

reply

Over-the-Top is about a trucker whose also an arm wrestler. His kid is being kept away from him by his rich pr!ck of a grandfather.

Real Steel is about a guy who boxes with giant robots and wants nothing to do with his kid.
