Bobby's music

After seeing him on this show, I was wondering if I'd heard any of Bobby Brown's music in the past without being aware of it. So, I looked him up, and as it turns out, I used to love "Every Little Step" and "Humpin' Around," though I never found out who the artist was until now. I gotta give him credit for having a great voice.

Bobby was the sh-- back in the day! He also did that song "My Perogative", and "Tender Roni". He was a part of New Edition until he figured that he could make more money on his own.

What that he had a good voice, or that Britney butchered it.

Sulalee, Bobby "left" the group due to behavioral issues and because he wanted to be the star of the group. He didn't like just being one of the 4 guys in the background. Ralph was the lead singer and Bobby was doing a lot of antics to get attention. The other guys voted him out of the group because of his behavior. He didn't leave on his own. The first album after he got kicked out of the group didn't do well, but oh man, that 2nd album did just 2 years later. He blew New Edition out of the water--although I liked them all. New Edition was successful, but just never a crossover group. They were always R&B. Bobby took over the pop charts back in the late 80s and the first 2 years of the 90s.

I found the song "girlfriend" on his first album. I didn't know that was him that had sung it. I remember that song getting regular radio play back then.

Sulalee, I was about to say that--"Girlfriend"! That's the only song I remember from the first album!LOL It was a nice song though! Yeah, that was around 1986--about a year after he was kicked out of the group. Then "Don't Be Cruel" came out in 1988. Bobby was the man back then! Bless his heart.

shiznit, Yes, earlier, when they were young it was bubble gum pop. Then when they were older, it was R n B. That has nothing to do with them not being a crossover does it? When I say they weren't a crossover, that typically means that the caucasian based stations didn't really play their music. I don't remember ever hearing New Editions music on caucasian stations. Tv or radio at that. But Bobby Brown was all over the caucasian channels back in his hey day. Just like Hammer, he was about the only rapper back in the late 80s/early 90s that you would hear/see on caucasian stations. He was a crossover. BBD, I only remember the song "Poison" on white stations but none of their other songs. I just remember not being able to escape Bobby Brown. I liked him, but he was on the radio and video stations 24/7!

Pop & Hip Hop smoothed out on the R&B tip" or something to the effect

LMAO! OMG, I forgot that! It was "Hip Hop smoothed out on the RnB tip, with a pop feel/appeal to it" LMAO! Oh my!

Maybe its just me but I always preferred the NEW EDITION stuff to his solo stuff. Even my 11 year old daughter loves Candy Girl!

And for what its worth I prefer Poison by BEL BIV DEVOE to Bobbys solo stuff too.

Interesting thread. On Bobby's first album he also had the modest hit "Girl Next Door" but I haven't seen the video since the Video Soul days on BET. I still like his song "On Our Own". Can't get it out of head right now as I type.

Whatever you planned for me. I'm not the one.

I still like his song "On Our Own".

I find that to be an underappreciated song. I loved the chorus even with the cheesy "Too hot to handle, too cold to hold..they are the ghostbusters and they're in control"

I remember always hearing the song "On Our Own" from Ghostbusters 2 back when that movie was out! It appeared to be a big hit. I really liked it. I think after that song is when Bobby sort of disappeared and became best known for Other ventures.

Also, yeah, I still say black radio, white radio! Hell, It's easier! LMAO I grew up in Nashville, and they just didn't play black music on white radio here back then, with the exception of Bobby Brown, Hammer, Michael & Janet Jackson......Now, those same white radio stations here play all sorts of black music, however, the black stations still don't play certain artists. For instance, the only Rihanna songs I've ever heard on a black station here are Pon De Replay (her first record, before she got "FIERCE"}, and the latest song, "So Hard", she's just always been considered Pop.........They play Robin Thicke all the time on black stations, especially the station geared towards the 40 and up crowd. Then they play Justin Timberlake all the time of course, But that's pretty much it as far as "pop". I was telling a friend of mine who lives in Miami that only "white" radio stations play Flo Rida where I live!

I never understood the concept of playing Beastie Boys or Eminem on rock stations. Sure they're white but their music is geared toward hip-hop so why not play it on those stations. I guess they assume white folks don't listen to hip hop stations but they still like the Beasties so why not put them on the rock stations.
"Black" stations rarely play Lenny Kravitz unless it's a more soulful song like "Thinking of You" but black folks listen to rock, too so why not play his other songs.
These radio stations don't give black and white listeners enough credit with what people are willing to listen to and not listen to. That's probably why I don't listen to radio much anymore except for the Smooth Jazz station. They don't discrimintate.

P.S. "On Our Own" was a big hit in the late 80s and was played just as much on MTV than on BET. At a time when a lot of Rock and Metal bands were being played such as Aerosmith and Skid Row, lol.

Whatever you planned for me. I'm not the one.

smokybrowneyes, there certainly isn't enough variety of music on radio. For instance, one of my favorite rock bands for many years has always been System of a Down. Although SOAD is not played on the popular radio stations here, we do have a "Rock" station that plays Nirvana, SOAD, Jimmy Hendrix, Tool, Godsmack........but oddly enough, I swear I've heard a Beastie Boys song on that station before. Don't know what that's about???LMAO I don't want to hear Beastie Boys ANYWHERE, let alone a rock station.

I was at a gas station yesterday, and I thought I heard "On our Own" song by Bobby Brown.....turns out it was another song that was out around the same time by the group After 7 called "In the Heat of the Moment"...........It sounds just like On Our Own. I was just freaking out that we were discussing that song then there it was (or so I thought)LOL

I don't really listen to rock stations (use to in the mid-90s though) but some years ago they were playing Beastie's "Intergalactic", "Body Movin'" and Em's "Lose Yourself" and maybe even "Stan".

I loved the New Jack Swing era and still listen to it sometimes. I don't care much for the overproduced R&B out right now w/ the rapper collaborations but I LOVE LOVE LOVE "neo" soul although such artists don't like to be labeled that.

Oh in addition to Beastie Boys I hated hearing Eminem on rock/alternative stations but to their credit they actually played NERD, DMX's "Do You" and Ice Cube's "Right Here, Right Now".

See, to me, that's just as odd as Beastie Boys being on a rock stations.LOL I love N.E.R.D., but I've never heard any of their music on the radio! I think I heard that song "frontin" all the time on radio, but was that a NERD song or just a Pharrell song?

That's the After 7 song I was thinking of but forgot the name of the song. Pebbles' song "Giving You the Benefit" came out about a year after "On Our Own" and has the same beat also. I'm thinking that all 3 songs were produced by L.A. and Babyface because they were all associated with them at one point but everyone ran out of ideas. Also, Christopher Williams' "I Talk to Myself" sounds just like "My Perogative".

SURE WAS!! All three of those songs had the exact same beat and were out at the same time! That's crazy. But they do that today. Remember the song "Yeah" by Usher, produced by Lil Jon, well that's the exact same beat for Petey Pablo's "Freak a Leek" and they were out at the same time, and I think there was a third song that was similar, but can't remember it!

I'm thinking it's Ciara's "Goodies". It has that similar whistling effect or whatever it was to it. All three songs have the Crunk sound to it.

Yep! How in the world did I forget about that song! You couldn't escape it. All 3 had the exact same beat. I actually didn't like Usher's song or Ciara's but I loved "Freek a Leek"! I like the music and Petey Pablo was funny. He said with a southern twang "I'm Shpalled (spoiled) and I don't like ta work dat hard!" I think I may just listen to it right now!lol

I'm in the wrong business. I need to start producing music on a MAC computer and recycle the same beat over and over so that I can make millions too! SMH

Is it just me or does anyone notices a "trend" going on with a lot of the songs mentioned above in these posts. There's no real instruments being played in these songs, not really. Just a bunch of computers and machines that's played a big part in music for the past 30 years at least. Some of these songs we've mentioned aren't that bad but it's a bunch of overproduced fluff. Bands with real instruments and great singing need to make a big comeback in 2010. Crack/drugs burnt out poor Whitney's voice 'cause she was one of the best singers of our time and I'm sick of some of these so-called singers that look good but their voices aren't that great. Makes you yearn for the days of Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and ol' school Mariah Carey.

Oh and a few other songs that sound alike:

"I Wanna New Drug" by Huey Lewis and the News vs. "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr but I Parker Jr copyed off of Huey Lewis

"1999" Prince and the Revolution vs. "Susudeo" Phil Collins

"White Horse" by Laid Back vs. "Erotic City" by Prince and the Revolution Prince liked "White Horse" so much that it inspired him to record "Erotic City"

"Looking Out the Front Door" by Main Source vs. "Let the Beat Hit'em" by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam

Look it up young children...

P.S. Is it just me or is Ready for the World's "Girl Tonight" one of the FREAKIEST songs in the 80s?
