Any plans for future adaptations?

Are they planning to make an adaptation of P.D. James's most recent Dalgliesh novel "The Lighthouse" in due course? There doesn't seem to be anything listed on IMDB yet.

Last I heard they were going to to start from scratch again with Death of an Expert Witness. What's become of this; I don't know....

im not too sure about the new adaptations of the older PD James novels either...not necessarily because of the actor switch...but the time and energy needed to adapt the novels all over again...thats like 20 something years worth to just up and redo... granted, Martin Shaw does exude more personality in the role of the commander than Roy Marsden did and would give a whole new light to the older novels...

i would absolutely love to see "The Lighthouse" in production...im reading it now actually... and im totally interested in seeing what they would do to the continuing story of adam and emma...

There's a listing for a production called "The Lighthouse", due for release in 2008, listed in IMDBPro (although I don't have access to that area). Perhaps this is the P.D. James adaptation?

In my opinion, the fact they lifted the marriage proposal from The Lighthouse, and tagged it onto the end of The Murder Room is a bad sign. :(

It comes across as if they had no intention of doing it, couldn't get the rights to it, or Martin didn't want to do any more. Then again, Janie Dee might not have wanted to come back, and they can just give us Adam post-honeymoon, and occassionally speaking to her on the phone (his end only, though) ;)

Then again, I'm just thinking out loud here. I could very well be wrong. Hopefully that's the case.

I hope that IMDBPro entry is Dalglesih's return.

Dalgliesh _did_ propose to Emma at the end of "The Murder Room" (novel), didn't he? They were both agonising separately over setting a date in "The Lighthouse".
I've dug out my copy of the novel, and here are the relevant passages:

[letter]... I can only write what is in my heart. My only hope is that you may care enough to make you wish to risk this adventure together. For me there is no risk. I can hope for no greater happiness than to be your lover and your husband. ...
... And now his heart leapt. She was coming purposefully towards him and breaking into a run. They met and he took her outstretched hands in his. She looked up into his eyes and he saw that hers were brimming with tears. He said gently, 'My darling, do you need more time?'
'No more time. The answer is yes, yes, yes!'
(The Murder Room, 2003, p. 371)

As I recall, that's pretty similar to the corresponding closing scenes of the film version, also set on a railway platform.

Well, well, well, that does change things a bit! I'm blanking over where I read that it was part of the latter novel (might have been a wiki entry), but a firsthand quote is far better. (Thanks) :)

So, now that roadblock is gone, let's have Martin back in The Lighthouse!

How can the letter/proposal scene at the end of "Murder Room", which aired in 2004, have been lifted from "The Lighthouse", which was published in 2005? Do I have my dates mixed up??

reply

I don't think so. I believe it was my mistake, however I did once read somewhere that the scene was lifted from the beginning of the last novel, and tagged onto the end of the last TV adaption.

Either way, are they planning on doing The Lighthouse?
