What happened to John Carpenter???

Let's see...when he was young he was brilliant. He gave us Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, and The Thing. All of these have withstood the test of time.

In recent years we've gotten this hideous remake of The Fog, Ghosts of Mars, Vampires, Escape from LA, and other junk.

What happened? Dementia? Drug use?

The remake of The Fog is worth studying as a case example of how many things you can do wrong in a film. Randomly slaughtering characters that you have failed to make us care about isn't terribly horrifying. This film has no sense of suspense. It has flashbacks which apparently are intended to explain the underlying direction of the film, but the flashbacks are so haphazard they fail at that.

He didn't direct this sorry excuse for a film. Also the type of films he used to make aren't in demand these days for some reason. CGI has ruined his style of film.

reply

He didnt direct this you moron.. Do you really think carpenter would make a horrible film like this?..

reply

Carpenter AND Debra Hill produced this crap. I feel violated and betrayed.

reply

Remakes tend to be awful. Adding another to the list is not surprising.

more like "what happened to the audiences?" they're idiots now.

IM RUNNIN THIS MONKEY FARM NOW FRANKENSTEIN! AND I WANNA KNOW WHAT THE F#@$ UR DOIN WITH MY TIME!

reply

actually the orig poster was right - John Carpenter didn't direct this but he did produce it and was his story too - would have been around the filming plenty enough to have had a say ..

reply

He was producer as in he put his name on it so they would look good having the original director on as producer and so he would make some money. Also he's given a story credit because he wrote the original film.

I doubt he had very much involvement with this film at all.

And that is actually quite a disgusting thing to do. Prostituting oneself by having your name put on garbage, knowing it is garbage, just to make money & rip off your fans in the process. Stanley Kubrick didn't prostitute himself to make a quick buck. Carpenter is just stupid & lazy with no self respect.

reply

I have to agree. Even thou I like Carpenter and understand he needs the money, when you see a budget of 18M, you know this isn't going to be up to par.

Then again... maybe he knew that and decided to just take the money knowing his version was still going to be the best? Sly Fox, eh?

Either way, this is a (bad) TV production at best. Gave it a 3

The Ward was actually pretty good, though flawed. And Cigarette Burns was really good.

Everyone is being a little harsh on John Carpenter. They were probably going to make this *beep* either way, Carpenter probably just figured if it was going to happen he should make some money from it.

No one is asking the fans of the original to replace that film with this one, in fact it was really just a quick cash grab from all involved. I doubt one person in the cast or crew really cared whether this film would be good or bad as long as it made money.

Also, this film came out in 2005, it was already a bit late to be complaining about it in 2013... I'm not even sure how I ended up here.

Carpenter put it best himself: he opens his hand, they drop a *beep* of money into his hand and in turn can remake, reboot, reuse whatever the *beep* they want. He's already made the movies, he doesn't care if people are going to waste time and money remaking them, much less remaking them badly because they can't think of something new and half-original.

Vampires and Escape from LA are both good movies. I haven't seen Ghost of Mars.

Escape From L. A. is an INSULT to Escape From New York. I mean—Jaws?!—WTF?!

John Carpenter’s Vampires, on the other hand, with James Woods? . . . I thought it was cool. I even liked John Carpenter’s Vampires 2: The Day of the Dead. There are times when I’ll take style (and sex appeal in women) over substance.

PS Hippie, your post lacks both an apostrophe and a question mark. People don’t listen to writing. People READ writing. When folks like you don’t know how to write, readers lose interest.

YES! I HATE stupidity!
