So how exactly does the fog tie into this movie?

I just watched this remake again recently and realized the actual fog has little to do with anything besides a fancy way to incorporate GCI. In the original version, the conspirators see the fog as a "sign from God" and utilize it to kill Blake and his crew (and take their money and run). They purposely mislead the ship through the fog onto rocks, where the ship sinks and everyone drowns. In this film, the conspirators simply meet with Blake on the ship, kill him and his crew and burn the ship (so everyone either burns or drowns)...it has nothing to do with fog, so why would Blake and his crew's ghosts utilize it, why not fire)..... So basically there was no reason for the fog in this film, unlike the original where it played an important role to what happen to the Elizabeth Dane.

I think the fog looked cool and helped build the atmosphere, which is probably the only reason they kept it in the movie.
