the ending

SPOILERS!

just see the movie (quite good) but i couldnt hear at the very end
if the victim of the road was jimmy foe sure or it was open to interpretation.
thanks

reply

Open interpretation..
He doesnt say a name, just says that it was a driver of a small car.(or so i remember)

reply

You are quite right...

BUT, as I explain in the comment toward the bottom of this thread, I think it should have been left even MORE truly open-ended. (Please see below...)

I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!

It's definitely made to be unclear but considering the reptition of the opening narration about the gods laughing at men who believe they control they're destiny, it seems cler that it was probably Jimmy's car. It's a great film and a great ending. You can read my full review of the movie at my blog (link below).

It was a nice touch, having the psychic fellow driving along the road over the skid marks at the very end.

Great flick!

the guy on the radio says:

"Last night the heavy snow claimed its first victim out on Highway 14 after a delivery truck lost control on the icy roads, instantly killing the driver of a northbound vehicle in a head on collision...(inaudible)"

reply

I agree that the radio at the end should have been a little louder, it was hard to hear what was being said.

I believe it was Jimmy's car, too.

Great twist. I enjoyed the film.

does anyone think the vagueness of the ending was a cover for them not having the budget to actually shoot a car accident scene?

I kind of want to like send them $100 and be like "this is money to get an actual car accident shot. I'm getting other people to send it in too. please re-shoot. thanks"

reply

No, I think it was meant to be like that. It keeps you guessing whether it was actually Jimmy or not...

reply

I'm quite sure it was jimmys car. The scene before the radio, shows guy pearce in his car and some light source, that gets closer and closer, hitting his face. Like headlights. What is interesting is that Guy pearce isn't scared or trying to avoid the accident like everyone would have done but it's like he was anticipating the accident. He chose to do it. Like for the first time he was in control of his life and not "gods". "A man makes his destiny" as Jimmy says right before the accident. Or is it not? Right after that Jimmy says "Nothing makes the Gods laugh harder."
I haven't noticed the psychic driving on the same road till you mentioned it. Interesting find!

reply

I think it's obvious that it's Jimmy. I think the matter of fact manner of a simple radio broadcast is done on purpose to highlight the fact that no matter what he did or where he was, even if hiding in a random motel room, death was going to find him. So it was a foregone conclusion that he would die at the end, and that is why there was no big deal about a car crash. It was more like "so what else is new?" kind of thing, "of course he died, isn't that obvious?"

reply

Of course it was Jimmy in the wreck. Why else would they have the radio spot and the psychic driving over the skidmarks? Very good ending though.

reply

the whole point of the movie is that he was going to die anyways. you have no control over life and death, it is in the hands of fate. the fortune teller tells him he sees no more roads, meaning he just knows he's going to die somehow. reason he says he is safe until the first snow is because he sees the image of jimmy with snow in his eyes driving or whatever. that is why he says the details are not available. he sees that image, then he has his little freak out because he sees nothing else and knows he's gonna die. in the end jimmy finally accepts it as a "blessing", like the teller says to him. you can see the exact moment he does except it is when he walks out of the motel room after his little bout with paranoia all night.

all in all, i thought the movie was excellent. a little slow, but i don't mind that in a movie as long as can hold my attention. i never lost my concentration for the whole flick, and that is something i can't say about a lot of other movies.

I have another theory about the ending. The movie somewhat expects you to focus on directions NORTH/SOUTH/EAST/WEST. Read the post I started:

reply

Oh c'mon, of COURSE it was Jimmy. That's rather the whole point of the film...when your number's up, your number's up. Nothing you can do to beat fate, etc. I mean...who the hell ELSE would it have been that died that would bear any significance whatsoever to the film's theme?

reply

it was jimmy, not debatable

reply

It was definitely Jimmy...the thing I like the best is the faux-twist at the end where the bullet doesn't go through both of their heads, and he thinks he might have survived it, but then he gets killed on the way back home.

This truly was an excellent film, it's a shame that the Hollywood system is so messed up that great films like this can't find big releases. If I ran this country, movies like this would get 3,000 screens.....Guy Pearce is a god.

reply

if he hadn't gone to the psychic none of this would have happened:) or if only he had moved to Florida. lol

reply

I think they deliberatly left the ending open somewhat. Letting us choose to think what we wanted in the end. My girlfriend CHOSE to ignore the quiet radio broadcast and beleived that he went home to his girl and lived happily ever after. Im not an idiot so i know guy got p0wn3d, lol.

i really like how this film played out, i have the same misgivings of most of yall, it should of been a wider release. Its unfortunate movies like "are we done yet" get more exposure than this.

Jimmy realizes that following someone elses idea for your life leads to making assumptions. As his assuming lopez is harrassing him leads to him confronting lopez about the shooting gallery target. He realizes you have to live your life as it happens, and not worry about what people tell you might happen. The radio story at the end is intended to make you think Jimmy dies. He doesn't. Everyone dies, no fortune teller can tell you when. Jimmy is thinking it is more important to get home to his girlfriend than it is to worry about what might happen if you let other people make your choices.

reply

Why would they bother telling us about a car accident if it wasnt Jimmys car? I took it for granted it was prob Jimmys car, thats the road he took & it was gonna happen no matter what.

reply

Precisely.
