Box Office Failure

Do you think it was deserved,or just unlucky
what your two cents?

reply

It was deserved in the sense that they didn't make an easy to sell movie. Damn shame though :(

reply

Of course it was a box office failure. It didn't have any explosions.

In fact, there are explosions.

Hmm, yeah and lots of them too, now that I think about it. I think you know what I mean though, heh.

They did a terrible job with marketing. I recall half paying attention to a commercial during that time. My daughter and I love this movie once we saw it on video, but the ad gave us no reason to go see it.

it does not matter now, its out there and its charming and great

OP

- who knows?
So many people are accustomed to Pixar & co, that stop-motion has become a hard sell.
Bet it's acclaimed as an all-time classic, in 10 years or so.

I loved the film.

reply

1) It's old fashioned stop-motion animation in an age where children are conditioned to like bright, oversaturated digital animation and 3D
2) It's just as quirky as Wes Anderson's other films and appealed to the same demographic
3) They didn't know how to market it

None of Wes Anderson's movies are box office smashes, so it's not surprising that this one wasn't, either. It's basically just a Wes Anderson movie with animated characters instead of actors. It is not simple children's entertainment, as some parents may have been expecting.

It is also a beloved film made with great artistry, and one that people will be watching 40+ years from now (along with Anderson's other films), unlike 90% of all contemporary American animation, which makes $100 million at the box office and then is almost immediately forgotten.

Neither I'd say. As an adult, most of its themes & dialogue seem best suited for grown audiences, not to mention its pacing. Meanwhile, its animation wasn't quite mainstream enough for today's youth I guess either.
What it plays like is actually like any of Wes' other films - youthful with adult material.
