Not a likable character in the bunch...

I almost deleted this movie from my DVR several times but I wanted to see how it was going to redeem itself in the end. There was not one character that I liked especially the mother. A dried up has been who never was-was the worst.

The acting was well done considering the lazy screenplay.

I was bored by it all.

4 out of 10-for the performances.

I loved it as well. Brenda Blethyn can do no wrong.

I usually like her but she was just doing an Alison Steadman in this film if you ask me. (Or 'channeling' Alison Steadman which I guess in the modern term.)

O that blue, blue shirt of yours

The mother was an annoying twit. Nothing redeeming about her. Brenda plays the same fat pathetic sow with an annoying voice in every frickin movie.

Jill was annoying with her crying.

I watched only the second half. Unless the first half was some setup that was needed to enjoy the 2nd half, it was just damn annoying.

I even found the retard special needs kid annoying at times.

You being a film critic (for who? Your own blog?) has precious little to do with anything and in no way makes your opinion more superior or correct than the original poster's. If you check RottenTomatoes you will see that critics were very much DIVIDED on this film, which is why its score is in the 50s.

I thought the movie was charming enough but overall, rather lacking. I understand the critique that there were not many likable characters too.

If you honestly think those credentials make your opinion any more valid or correct than others, then you have some serious issues. :| Seriously I'm giggling at your sarcastic "What would I know?" quip like this suddenly makes you an authority.

Why would I go through all your posts? I'm not a stalker. I merely replied to your one post in this thread because that's what discussion is about.

And no, I did not ever imply that if you work in the industry your opinion is inferior, that is completely ridiculous and the fact you jump to that conclusion speaks wonders to how defensive you are. I think everyone's opinion is valid and THAT was my point. You being a critic does not in any way make your opinion stronger or more correct, and the only reason you brought it up was as an attempt to make yourself sound more right and knowledgeable. "Clearly you don't know what good film is, I liked it and I'm a movie critic!" Completely irrelevant. If you didn't think you were an authority because of your profession you would not have brought your profession up. Simple.

And THAT, dear, was my point.

That comment was not made in this thread, however. The OP gave a critique on the film that was quite valid - that the characters were pretty repulsive and unlikable and not fun to root for. They made no mention of critics whatsover, your reference to it was entirely out of left field and reads as a lame attempt to seem snotty. That's what happens when people bring up their profession for no reason.

Your point ended up being irrelevant to this thread. Not only that, you belitted the first poster and their opinion saying they don't know what good film is, and this statement was based entirely on the fact they ended up disliking a movie you liked.

The fact is critics were heavily divided on this film, some loved it and some hated it. I fail to see what that has to do with ANYTHING mentioned in this thread or the criticism that was raised here.

Then you misunderstand me. It had nothing to do with defending someone, it had everything to do with the entitled air YOUR posts had.

I have thoughts and opinions, I do not write reviews. Why?
