In reply to another topic about it being propaganda

Originally this was going to be a reply to someone else's post but
I decide instead to make this a separate one.
Someone else had commented on this film being socialist propaganda which
could be used as such but I don't think that the producer Adam Curtis meant
it to be interpreted that way.

I don't think Mr.Curtis was being socialist or it's advocate in this film.
In another one of his documentary series he actually shows how socialism failed
in England and how a socialist economy ruined the U.S.S.R.
Rather the point he was making is that individual freedom or autonomy was and is
being undermined by some corporate interests in the name of capitalism or free enterprise.

Some of these corporations don't give a damn about your autonomy or individualism
anymore than the socialists or communists.
All they're concerned about is making a profit off of you and everyone else that
they can brainwash with their slick advertising.
As this documentary goes to show the PR firms were successful in two things.
Biggest accomplishment was getting women to buy cigarettes, by making it appear
sophisticated and glamorous to smoke.
Previously only men were smokers for the most part.
Run a good ad showing hollywood celebrity chicks smoking cigarettes gets the image across that
a cigarette in your hands/mouth makes you look sexy and
glamorous like the movie stars.

Another big accomplishment was convincing the average consumer to buy luxury or
frivolities as opposed to necessities.
Convincing them to buy things they really don't need but should desire because it
somehow makes them feel affluent to spend money on luxury items.
Well today this hasn't changed obviously.

Why did the chicken cross the road?
Answer: It was trying to get away from Col.Sanders.
