Jesse's struggle with alcohol

So I'm starting to watch this AGAIN. And as Jesse is walking across the bridge with Reggie I'm thinking "he's such a nice guy...took in the dog...feeling sorry that he lost his"...slobber slobber...yeah yeah I'm an old woman with a huge crush.

On it about Jen and how she treated him....how could she. But then I remember he's a drunk...they're not the easiest people to live with.

But THEN I find myself wondering.....was he a drunk before meeting Jen or is she the one that drove him to drink. I'm of the old school when it comes to being an alcoholic. It's not always the drunks total fault...others can drive them to the bottle. But please let's not debate that.

So does anyone know....did that ever come out in any of the movies or even the books for those of you who read them?
