what is Lassie?

What breed of dog is Lassie? I've never seen any of the originals, so I don't know.

Actually she's a collie, but they do look extremely similar. Shetland Sheepdogs look like miniature collies.

Get it right.

Lassie is a Collie(Rough)

There is no such breed as a Shetland Collie. There are a number of dogs breed with Collie in the name, but the Collie is the original and is known purely as a Collie. They consist of rough and smooth, rough collies are long haired as is Lassie.

In the US Lassie films Lassie was played by a Dog, when Lassie is a Bitch, They used a Dog because they are 2" taller then the bitch. This new Lassie film Lassie is played by a Bitch.
One of my mates is a Collie breeder, and I have a Blue Merle Rough Collie.

Had to reply while reading this out of boredom!

I also have a Blue Merle Rough Collie, its quite annoying how people sometimes see him and call him a 'lassie' dog.

But i'm silly.

Why are you calling all of us idiots? I knew it was a rough collie; there's no need to get nasty with a 15 year old college sophomore. I'd like to see you pass quantum physics with criminology with an A at 15 years old.

reply

I am amazed that every string I've ever read on IMDb degenerates into really venomous attacks on complete strangers for no good reason whatsoever (is America really that angry?). But to respond with, "Don't call us idiots because I'm a prodigy, Nya, nya"...well that's a new one. The very act of posting such a childish response to a childish insult calls into question one's supposed genius. I don't mean that as an insult, because of course that would be hypocritical. But you should consider there is a difference between intelligence and maturity, so cultivate both and don't take anything seriously (much less personally) from complete strangers. The best way to deal with anonymous insults is to ignore them.

I agree with just about everything you said in that post, but you probably could have made that point without the dig at Americans. Why do you even assume the poster in question is American? Do you believe that hostility doesn't exist in other countries? I know most of the world hates America thanks to Bush (you might be surprised to find that most of us hate him just as much as you do :), but please do not take his idiocy out on us.

But yes, there are a lot of belligerent half-wits out there. Generally speaking, it's best to ignore them.

I invented string theory at 8 years old (but they stole it from me)

So I was reading through your other posts to find a nice hole to poke in your genius story, and I found one! 2 months after the post in this thread you claim to be a 14 year old Junior, as opposed to the 15 year old Sophmore you claim to be in this post. Sigh, why do people lie on here?

And out of curiosity, what the hell is Quantum Physics with Criminology? As a criminal justice major I would be very intrigued to find some way that those two subjects have anything to do with each other (unless someone stole String Theory).

I LOST MY HEART AT LASSIE FIRST TIME WHEN I SAW IT IT WOULD NICE TO OWN 5 COLLIES AND 2 SHELTTIS

Just wanted to let you know the lead dog playing Lassie in the new movie is a male. I met him at Universal Studios, California. I have a picture of me hugging him. The triner told me he has the lead role as Lassie. A bitch (dog) is used as a stunt double.

reply

do any of you know the order of the 9 generations of Lassie's: what I mean is do you know the order of the dogs in the order in which they performed on tv or in movies?

reply

Um, hate to break it to ya'll but there aren't "generations of lassies"

they get all the dogs from various breeders and often use multiple dogs on the film.

My dog is a 3 year old collie and has the same father as the male dog that was used for the majority of this film. My family is good friends with the woman who owns the father, they've sent us a few picks from the sent via e-mail.

reply

Who the hell believes that?

This statement is somewhat true. I heard that the collies used for the latest production cannot verify some lineage to the original Lassies. Being filmed in the UK I guess there were huge problems in getting the dogs overseas for the filming because of so many restrictions. Most of the earlier productions based in the US though did use Lassie/Pal generations. For more info on Lassie there is always their website. This link takes you to their FAQ section about the latest movie, but for those not that familiar with Lassie, the serials & movies there are other pages on the site to check out and learn about Lassie.

My Aunt and my mom both owned collie kennels in the 50's, 60's and 70's. We bred, raised and showed them on the collie circuit and at 4H dog shows. I grew up in a home with five rough collies (2 blues, 1 tri and 2 sables. We are even contemplating getting a puppy by the end of this year and you guessed it, even my children want a collie.

reply

I stumbed onto this site as I just seen a new Lassie movie is coming out.

I never heard of the different breeds of collie before today. Very interesting. I thought those "blue" collies were just a regular collie dog but it's very old an it's hair was turning gray. I know, I'm ignorant.

Hmm, I just saw a picture of a smooth coat collie. I never seen one of those before. This one almost looks like a doberman with longer hair (almost) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SmoothCollieTri2_wb.jpg

Don't reply to my post unless you're talking to me. Thank you.

The main dogs used in every Lassie film are descendants of the original Lassie, Pal. Yes, multiple dogs are used throughout filming and they may be acquired from different breeders, but there is always one dog related to Pal. I believe this is also stated in the trivia section of virtually every Lassie movie on this site, but if you want a quick read, there's always Wikipedia.

So yes, there are "generations of Lassies."

reply

Being that they're purebred dogs, it's like Kevin Bacon - you go back far enough, and they're all related to Lassie.

reply

For the record:¨
Shetland Sheepdogs are NOT *smaller versions* of Collies. They originate from the original black collie dog, as does the Border Collie and Collie (Rough and Smooth), but were mixed with different breeds along the way... They were developed simoltaneously, not as products of one another.
Blue Merle, Tricolor and sable are not different *types* of the three mentioned breeds, but colour-variations.
A Blue merle is just as *regular* albeit not as frequent as a sable (lassie-coloured) Collie.

The IMDB trivia says otherwise.

"My, where did you get that lovely spatula?"

reply

"One thread that connects all the Lassie projects is Lassie herself. Every one of the long string of Lassie productions has featured a collie directly descended from the original canine star, a dog named Pal. The new film was made with 8-year-old Lassie the ninth, and three other non-related collies, whose biggest challenge were in scenes swimming across Loch Ness on her way home."

Were we reading a different bit of trivia then?

Erm, no there isn't. The Shetland Sheepdog USED to be called the Shetland Collie (Shetland Collie club was founded in November 1908). It was recognised by the KC in 1914 as the Shetland Sheepdog because Collie breeders disagreed with the association. Shelties are not miniaturised collies, they are mixed of a variety of different breeds.

I am a registered FCI sheltie breeder, I assure you I know its history and am comfortably aware of the other breeds in the herding group.

You are right about one thing though - there are two types of collies: The american and the english type.. Well actually, there are also short haired collies. That makes 3 (possibly 4 if they come in an american and english version). But there is no such thing as a miniature collie. Sorry

Oh, you pompous so-called dog experts...Lassie is actually a Bichon Frise with makeup effects by Rick Baker. It's movie magic!

reply

Just as a note..Americans aren't that angry. I'm an American and I'm not angry.

I'm a big tough girl. I tie my own sandals and everything.

reply

LOL, that Bichon Frise comment is priceless.

Lassie is actually a midget in a dog costume because let's face it; people can't talk to dogs.

reply

But dogs talk to people....my neighbors dog talked to me quite often.

***
Hey-Hey/IX - Current Lassie. Featured in the first Lassie series that was ever shot outside of the US.
Hey-Hey DOES APPEAR in ONE scene in the new movie. Hey Hey is currently on tour around the US promoting the new Lassie brand dog food and the new movie.
***

The dogs portraying "Lassie" in this film are NOT direct descendents of the first generation "Lassie" collie, "Pal".

Universal Studios does NOT travel with the bloodline "Lassie". The company that is supplying the dogs for the movie supplies the collies that play the part of Lassie in Universal Studio theme parks "Animal Actor" show, a show with celebrity animal lookalikes. All of their animals are pet passported for international travel as part of their regular routine. Their dogs were ready to go when the decisions were made regarding the production schedule.

So you may have met a dog from this new film at Universal Studios, but it is not Lassie 9. Lassie only travels with owner and trainer Carol Riggins.

At the time the new film started production the bloodline "Lassie" did not have the necessary paperwork – called a pet passport – to travel and work internationally. This is now taken care of.

You can see what the 9th generation Lassie looks like by visiting:
www.lassie.net Notice the collie's white blaze is much thicker than the dogs appearing in the film and Universal Studios.

Ha ha wow I'm going to kill my cousin. That's what I get for leaving her alone in my room! I should have figured she'd hack into my account, as it's what she does lol. In fact, she is a fifteen year old college sophomore, but I'm definitely not! I just graduated high school with all AP classes and a 4.2 + G.P.A. I'm on my way to college, though. As for the quantum physics with criminology, I have no idea what this is, or if it even exists. My cousin is extremely immature, and I apologize for any chaos she may have caused!

Riiiiiiiight, Son of Sam. I'm surprised no one picked up on this allusion. You get Internet access in Sullivan Correctional Facility? Oh sure.

reply

Lassie is always a male Rough Collie. And yes, there HAVE been generations of Lassies. They use doubles as they do with any actors in movies, but the main dog is a grandson of "Pal" the first Lassie. If they started getting the main dog from breeders that's a new thing. And if anyone is wondering, they use male dogs because females shed so much during the year that the continuity on film would look weird if they used mainly females.
