Non-Hong Kong people...describe your own on 'One nite In Mongkok'

Ok, got there last night around 8...walked around ladies' street, bought a few things, took some pictures, and here are what I think of Mongkok.

1 --- You see as many Americans/foreigners in Mongkok as Latinos in California/Texas.

2 --- Vendors are extremely pushy when they are selling products, especially using rude demeanor and poor body language.

3 --- Thief are everywhere, I lost my camera (which is replaceable) but now the 50+ pictures I took from Hong Kong to Mongkok is all gone.

4 --- Why are there two 7/11 next to each other just across the street?

5 --- Monks are begging for money donations.

6 --- Seems like with all the people being so densed at the city, there was not any police offiers control/patrol situations.

7 --- Just realized that people in Hong Kong/Mongkok use English more than Mandarin.

Feel free to add your own experience to the city if you ever stop by there as a visitor.

Cantonese would be most common, not Mandarin. English is used but wonder off tourist paths and it is a bit more difficult. Mong Kok is exciting, busy, noisy, smelly, and all in a good way. I have never seen a place quite like it.

I'm not from HK but I live there for 11 yrs. Let's see here...

1. Mongkok is a precisely the place where locals and tourists alike would do their bargain-hunting. Electronics, knock-off designer labels, imported Japanese fashion, food, porn... You name it, Mongkok has it, and it has them cheap.

2. I think that's with every tourist attraction, or should I say, tourist trap in any city in the world. But then again, your typical Honger has a pretty bad rep for being pretty rude - at least compared to other Chinese-speaking areas in East Asia.

3. I'm sorry about your loss, but HK does have a very low crime rate, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't exercise caution. Believe me, HK is as tame as you can get compared to all those cities up there in Mainland China.

4. That I really don't know why, but HK has the highest concentration of convenience stores in the world.

5. It's a tradition for Buddhist monks across East Asia to beg for alms. They have that in Japan too, but I would strongly advise people NOT to give jack to the "monks" in HK. They are fakers from the Mainland!

6. You should see the amount of popos in Mongkok at night - sometimes I'm inclined to think HK is a massively well-organized police state (or city!). In fact, there are more cops in HK than there are in New York. The Hong Kong Police are seriously everywhere!

7. Hongers do have this thing against Mainlanders (whether Canto or Mando-speakers) even though it's very much disguised simply because the tourism sector relies a lot on these filthy rich Mainlanders buying up all the Gucci or whatever labels. And besides, English is an official language in HK - you would encounter as many Hongers who can't speak a word as you would hear those who are so fluent that it puts me to shame...
