Any Cantones speaker out there?

In case yes, can you translate "Wong gok hak yau " into English? One more, in the last few days I have been seeing a lot of movies from Hong Kong. Is Hong Kong the place crammed with drug dealers, gangs feuds, petty crime, etc. described in Johnny to's and Derek Yee's movies, or it is a more or less peaceful place where crime is under control?

Thank You.

I wanted to be the first kid on my block to get a confirmed kill.

First of all, the English name of this movie is "One Night in Mongkok";

2ndly, the situation there is not that bad. It's just a fiction based on magnified factors, not a real story.

reply

Yes I know that's the English name, I just want to know whether it's a literal translation of the original title or not.

I wanted to be the first kid on my block to get a confirmed kill.

reply

It's from the literal meaning of the original name.

reply

Thank you pal. Another question: Have Cantones, Mandarin and Chinese something in common?

Thank you again.

reply

You are welcome :)

The Cantones and Mandarin are both Chinese. In most cases, they are only different in pronunciation. In fact every part of China has their own dialet and the difference in pronunciation makes communication a mission impossible for people from different place.

Under this circumstance, the Mandarin comes out as an official pronunciation standard of Chinese words. It's more like amended Beijing dialect, and nether easy nor willing to be accepted for southerners. So, for some southern provinces such as Fujian, Guangdong and Hongkong, dialects still play the most important role in every aspect of daily life.

reply

OK. So you write the same ideograms and a Cantones speaker pronounces one way and a Madarin speaker pronounces differently. Is that correct?
Does it happen with all the dialects, with some of them or with just a few?

What language do the people speak in Taiwan?

Have you seen Ai zuozhan (Love Battlefield)? It is a very nice movie.

Thank you again, pal.

reply

Yeah, pretty much the same thing. Actually not exactly the same in ideograms but you can always figure it out with a little patience. It happens with most dialects in southern China; In north, where Madarin derived from, the situation is better. Sinkiang and Tibet is a totally diferrent picture: they have their own culture. Half of them don't speak or understand Chinese at all. Communicating with them is a same scene as with Africans.

Cantone is well-known just because of the splendid entertainment industry of Hongkong. For people in Taiwan, they take Mandarin as offical language and also have their own dialet calls "Minnan".

Ai Zuo Zhan? No yet but thanks for your recommendation :D As I know the best movie from Hongkong these years is this one:

reply

I have seen all three Infernal Affairs and liked them very much. Each one, is very good but all three make a whole even better than its parts. The actors are extremely good not to mention that Kelly Chen is beautiful, in point of fact Hong Kong movies usually cast very good and beautiful actresses.
I also loved Johnny To's PTU, and Thrown Down. I shouldn't forget The Heroic Trio and Breaking News which are the other two To's I've seeen up to date. Among the movies I love best I also include Woo-ping Yuen's Yong Chun and Tai ji zhang san feng which I consider real craftsmanship.

Please I will thank any recommendations you can make me regarding must-see movies.

Since Hon Kong movies are so good I assume they must have a couple of good film schools there. Do you know something on the subject? I think I would love to study in Hong Kong.

May I ask you if you live in Hong Kong?

I wanted to be the first kid on my block to get a confirmed kill.

reply

No, I am living in Beijing right now. :)

Woo-ping Yuen is really great! He is also the Gongfu instructor of Matrix.

I never heard of any famous film schools in Hong Kong.. As I know, many Gongfu stars used to be actors of traditional Chinese Opera.

I prefer some old movies:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100973/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092263/

enjoy~~

reply

Yes I knew Woo-ping Yuen he was involved with The Matrix, in point of fact he's responsible for the good things on the movie.

I'll check out the Swordsman saga. How many episodes did they make, two or three?

As I write movies come to my memory, for example the very good Heping fandian (1995) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113292/; John Woo's hallucinatory Die xue jie tou and thrilling Lashou shentan.

I wanted to be the first kid on my block to get a confirmed kill.

reply

Three perhaps... but it seems that they are not in a consistent style.

Heping Fandian is famous because of Yun-Fat Chow, he was the No.1 movie star in 1990s. I watched many movies and TV plays of him. :)

These years mainland of China also produced some great movies such as
Jin ke ci qin wang(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162866/)
Shi mian mai fu(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385004/)
and
Ying xiong(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299977/)

In my point of view, comparing with the Hongkong movies, mainland productions are much closer to Chinese traditional culture.

reply

Thank you, I have already seen Hero and The House of the Flying Daggers and liked both very much, I haven't seen yet Jing ke ci qin wang, which (following your recommendation) I plan to see as soon as possible.
During the last days I've seen "Turn", "Cutie Honey" and "Gozu" (Japan); "Arahan" and "My Beautiful Girl Mari" (both Korea) and A1 tou tiao (HK) except for the last one they're all very good movies.
Regading A1 tou tiao it has only two good things Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, who is a very good actor and Angelica Lee who is very beautiful.

I'm going to buy Swordsman and Once Upon in China (and a couple of Tsui Hark's movies) Which would you buy, the remastered, DTS newer version or the older ones? The DTS editions cost twice the price the older ones. Have you seen any of the remastered versions?

See you

reply

You mean this one:

Right?

No I have only watched the old version. I heard that the re-mastered version is a better choice but partly because it cost only a little more than the old one here.

reply

Yes, that one

"Is Hong Kong the place crammed with drug dealers, gangs feuds, petty crime, etc. described in Johnny to's and Derek Yee's movies, or it is a more or less peaceful place where crime is under control?"

I know this is an old post but I couldn't help laugh a little bit.
I was in Hong Kong with my girlfriend (to meet her family) for a few months at the end of last year and spent quite a bit of time in Mongkok. I never really saw any of the activities shown in the movie occur there so my impression is that I was very safe walking around there by myself. The only major crime I know of in Hong Kong is the bloody video and movie piracy that is running rampant over there. EVERYBODY (gross generalisation but well, nah, from what I saw of the family I came to know, quite true) over there just buys and trades in illegal DVDs!
Anyway after I'd watched the movie last night I turned to my girlfriend and announced "if it really is as bad as all these blimmin' Hong Kong movies make it out to be, we are NEVER going back to visit your folks again! They can just come here!"
But no, it seemed pretty lawful and under control as far as I could observe AND I was there during the whole WTO riots!

reply

How much are those pirate DVDs priced? Quite curious, since legal editions are very affordable in Hong Kong, at least Chinese DVDs. I assume that the majority of the pirate DVDs must be copied from Japanese originals which, most of the times, are very pricey.

Hong Kong looks really like a nice place to spend some time. Nevertheless you can always tell you girlfriend that you are scared of the crime wave, that will spare you further visits to tour in-laws.

I wanted to be the first kid on my block to get a confirmed kill.

reply

Aw the pirated DVDs range as so their quality. Street vendros sell them for a pittance but quality isn;t gonna be up to much. I paid more attention to the legitimate DVDs and left the piracy to the chinese families I got to know who knew all about it. think they get deals where they get 4 films around about the price of one! Its crazy!
Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwartzenegger were on tv public service announcements when I was there telling people off and why its illegal and not helping their local film business'.
As for not visiting the inlaws? Hahahaha. No, it wasn't bad at all and I really didn't want to leave when it was time to go. Think I'd quite like to live there for a year or so really! Also visited Japan during that trip but preferred Hong Kong.

reply

How was the food during the sojourn? I imagine it was awsome.

Did you have the oportunity to assit to Hong Kong Film Festival?

"Did you have the oportunity to assit to Hong Kong Film Festival?"

No, unfortunately not. The only film I got to see at a cinema whilst away in Hong KONG was King KONG.
I'm a kiwi (New Zealander) and have had some dealings with WETA and Jackson in the past so was doing my bit to support them in their new project ... though I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would to be honest.

Awwww, actually now that I think about it, I did see a Hong Kong film while I was there with Andy Lau in it whose english title is (I think) All About Love and was trying to find time to go see, is it called, The Promise? But never got to.

However apart from theatres I watched some other asian movies that were in my girlfriend's family's DVD collection like 'Drink, Drunk, Drank' or something like that with Miriam Yeung and 'Fearless' with Jet Li and a film about 'Seven Swords' and the only other film I remember seeing was Jackie Chan's New Police Story but only got to see half of it before I was interupted and never got back to it. Oh and another film with Andy Lau in it where he starts off as a kid and then grows older and older and older over the space of about a week and his family doesn't recognise him when he's a man and thinks their son has run away from home - I thought it was gonna be a comedy but it ended up being quite sad and I didn't really like it! I don't remember the name of that film however.

reply

Have been to Hong Kong several times and have stayed there as a kid.

Seemed lawful enough, but there are problems in HK involving the triads. Problems is stories pop off of officers being pocketed by them.

I think the movie is an example of triads being involved in crimes in both China and HK.

reply

so triads are a problem in hong kong?
I plan to go see my gf in feb 2007, should i be watching my back?
Btw all the hong kong films i've seen are triad cop/flicks.

reply

The answer to your question is don't worry about the Triads, they have been around for ages but rarely target the tourists and ordinary citizens. Most of the time they are not as what outsiders see in the movies. In fact, I have yet to see a film from Hong Kong that accurately shows what the real Triads are like. One of the reasons is that Triads involvement in the Hong Kong film industry is traditionally strong, they have absolutely nothing to gain by revealling their true identity.

There are plenty of movies belonging to other genre from Hong Kong, but they don't generally draw much attention in the West.

reply

Nah theres no problems for tourists, HK is like any other city, theres bound to be criminal elements and street people trying to fleece you for something. As long as you stay in the tourist areas there should be no problem. You could walk by somebody in real life in any country and not know they are in gangs. Same everywhere you go. Just use you instincts, don't go into dark alleyways and dark places.
