Who was Sue? (potential spoiler)

I wonder if I overlooked something. I think Sue, the girl he sees pictured in the newspaper at the drugstore, is the passenger in the car crash in the beginning. But who was she? What was her connection to the hitman? Why was he looking for her?

The Sue you are talking about was Roy's (or Lai Fu's, in the Cantonese version) girl friend when both of them were in the village in China. Roy was keen on visiting her in Hong Kong, that's why he asked Dan Dan to bring him to Sue's address written on the back of the envelop - only to find Sue's grandma. At that time, of course, Sue was not there.

hmm, I always persumed it was his sister, but only because it says so on the back of the UK DVD case.

I thought Sue was his girlfriend. They both grew up in the same village so I presumed they were childhood sweethearts, set to get married. But then she traded in backwater village life for the bright lights of the city and ended up getting in with some bad people and became the girl-of-the-moment for a gang member (who happened to be the son of the gang's boss).

Sue is also the girl who was in the car that got rammed into at the beginning of the film. Lai-Fu accepted the job partly because he wanted to find her. Do you remember the scene where he points the gun at the fat-man asking him why he hired them to make hits, and then sell them out to die? He took the job partly to find Sue, and also to seek vengeance for his brother, who did the same earlier and got killed.

From what Lai-fu explains to Dandan, his character seems to point out that they would have gotten married if she hadn't gone to Hong Kong.
