If I really dug this movie, or if it's just a self indulgent, pretentious movie that isn't very good.

It counts for a lot. You don't necessarily have to like a film for it to be good in certain ways.

But also, I could understand a number of criticisms one might make against this movie but I wouldn't think it was self-indulgent or pretentious at all... just in case my opinion might tip you over :D
I was amazed by what an awesome job Logan did on his makeup as a Junior High Schooler.
Most of my friends' makeup at that age either looked like clowns, like the makeup had been applied with a whore brush or the makeup was barely noticeable. Makeup takes a while to get the hang of.
Logan's wigs also looked very professional. I know adult women who are still trying to get wigs to look decent.

I'm still thinking about where I stand when it comes to my opinion of this film. Do I like it? Do I hate it? I don't know. The fact I'm here nearly a month later says that at least its memorable.
