In your opinion, can Malcom Stumpf act?

I'm watching this movie as sure speak, and I'm not sure.

But looking at him, I'd say he'd make a great candidate for Charile in a theatrical adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Sometimes his voice sounds as if he is reading and not feeling though.

What do you all think?

reply

hard to say, I have a few doubts. In some scenes he is really natural and controlled, like the scenes he stands in front of the mirror. In other parts he sometimes shows a sort of clumsiness. However it could well be the low budget, limiting the number of takes.
As a whole I really liked watching him and I admire his style.

reply

He is the best actor in existence. Forever.

And when he's bad, he's just acting that he's acting bad. Genius. Pure genius, that kid.

reply

You're so funny! And yes talented too. So how are you and your mother doing?
HAN and I are doing great. She just wrapped a 30 minute indie. Was a BLAST!

reply

Absolutely. He played the role perfectly. A thirteen year old boy that is sexually conflicted is, by nature, somewhat awkward, out of place and deeply introspective.
Stumpf nailed those qualities of his character Logan and when he went into the alternative personality of Leah, he was totaly into the feminine role.
Top notch acting, top notch film....I want more!!

reply

I agree he was amazing in this movie.

There not many movies out there that can stir up so many emotions in my.
I felt compellingly excited with Logan and his way of realizing and accepting his nature, his attraction toward Rodeo.
I would even go so far that I felt somewhat aroused and emotional frustrated at one time and another.

I will in fact keep an eye on this young actor in other projects.
He could be a big star, although he is one already in my book!

reply

I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. It seemed quite natural, like he wasn't acting at all. Love him.

reply

I really enjoyed this movie. When are you going to make another one?

reply

i felt his acting was top notch. it's the way a teenager would talk and act.
in my opinion he was casted perfectly for the role of Logan.

reply

i thot he was a really good actor, and that it was very believable. VERY indie. he did seam to be reading lines in some of them, but overall, i thot he was very good and played off a gay/aspiring trans teen very well

reply

In my opinion, yes, but not well. His uncomfortability seemed to stem more from being uncomfortable in front of the camera, rather than playing uncomfortable. He didn't deliver any lines very convincingly, and I think the direction just made everything worse.

No. This film could have been great, but wasn't.

reply

I really enjoyed this movie. I watched on IFC yesterday at like One in the morning. I had school but this kept me up. Malcolm Stumpf is stellar. I love his hair/awkwardness. He's great on film. The movie i thought, could relate to a lot of young teens. I'm fifteen. i enjoyed it.

reply

He's too young looking and a bit too small to play Charlie, in my opinion.

reply

I think the better question is "Is malcolm effective?" This is one of my favorite movies and I found malcolm totally beliveable in his role.(sidenote, malcolm was like 12 when he made this)
At the end of this film, do you believe it? Do you believe that Logan lives somewhere and this *beep* is happening to him? I do. Do you think it's hard to be logan, and live where he does with those stupid people? you bet. this film is a triumph, a collage of many styles, but not repetitve. I loved it and can't wait for what Cam cooks up next.

reply

Agree on all your points!

reply

Wonderfully put. I found him amazing - very convincing.

P.S. Anyone else find a parallel between Stumpf and the actor who plays "Reid" on "Criminal Minds" (albeit just because of physical traits)???

reply

Was Stumpf really 12 when had made this? He was born in 1991 and the movie was released in 2006. It's more likely he was 14 or 15.

reply

When he says his lines, no. It's embarrassingly bad.

reply

I think he did a GREAT job! I could really feel that awkward time when we are becoming teenagers--and I think alot had to do with his acting--there's a certain clumsiness to that time in our lives and maybe that is where ppl are getting confused. He did a wonderful job.

reply

In my opinion after watching this movie, I would have to say that his lines were delivered with great precision. Although I would have to agree that some of his lines did sound as if he were reading them from a book, perhaps it was just because of the low budget or who knows, but for his age yes he is an AMAZING actor.

Very convincing.

reply

I thought he did a good job; not an easy part to play esp. for a young
teenage boy. The scenes with the older teen talking on the phone, it was not
Malcolm speaking but a female did those voice overs. He if he sticks with it
I'm sure he will do great.

reply

Let's keep in mind the budget on this film was about $50,000, that is peanuts when it comes to making a movie. Given the limited resources, I think the film played out very well, and I really though Malcolm Stumpf did a great job.

I'm somewhat disappointed that he hasn't done anything else, I thought he had great potential as an actor, and would eagerly watch him in any film he might be in. Though today he is 20 years old. People change over time, but I still believe there was great potential there.

Perhaps he has moved on to college, and will eventually return to acting.

I haven't seen this movie, but Malcom did do another film - The Next Best Thing with Madonna. I'm no fan of hers and people say that movie stinks, but I enjoyed it and I thought the very young Malcolm as Sam was amazingly natural and talented! Loved his performance in The Next Best Thing. Want to see WIld Tigers I have Known!
