question

I am not sure of the terms used on the sub, but is there a job title on the sub named Webbs and Cobb? In Crimson Tide (which is a great movie) there were key actors named Cobb and Webbs, am I missing something, or is it just a copy of a great movie? Actually this movie was pretty entertaining. Thanks

it is actually COB, which is Cheif of the Boat, he is the most senior enlisted person in the sub. I think the "Webbs" you are referring to is actually "Weps" and he si the Weapons Officer, he would be the officer in charge of the guys who are responsible for the armaments on the boat.

reply

It's actually "WEPS" short for the guy in charge of firing the weapons systems... and COB stands for CHIEF OF THE BOAT, a Chief who is usually in charge of moral of the crew and right hand man of the Captain... they call the Chief of the Boat the "COB"

Submarine terms:

Captain: The Commanding Officer of the submarine. Actual rank of the Captain of a submarine is Commander, not Captain but all naval commanding officers are referred to by the title of Captain regardless of rank. Sometimes referred to as the "CO" which is just short for Commanding Officer.

XO: short for Executive Officer. Usually a Lieutenant Commander. Some XO's achieve the rank of Commander prior to leaving their boat as an XO.

There are 4 Department Heads
They are...

WEPS: Weapons Officer
NAV: The Navigator (referred to in this film as the Navigation Officer)
ENG: The Engineer
SUPPO: The Supply Officer (referred to informally as The Chop)

COB: Chief of the Boat. Usually a Senior Chief or Master Chief Petty Officer. He is what non-submarine units refer to as the Command Master Chief (or Command Senior Chief).

Aloha ,
I was part of this project filmed in 15 days on Oahu. I played the part of the Weapons Officer. After reading the message boards here, I wanted to comment and say that while parts of the movie are a bit stretched, one should take into account the budget and timeline in which it was shot. I was on set for little over a week, and I can say bts (the director) did a great job keeping things moving along, all while trying to get the best from his actors. Too bad these things cant be stated before the movie starts, then people might appreciate it more....I am a straight man, and I appreciate the message being conveyed in "Tides". If you get a chance to watch that version, its much more entertaining, and dramatic.

Cheers,
Steve Boatright

Steve,

I get that for an actual submariner the uniform discrepancies, chain of command stuff, whether the captain always takes the com when he enters the control room etc etc may be very important.

For me I didn't notice uniform stuff etc and actually enjoyed the movie. Of course stuff was dramatised and I know some of that stuff wouldn't happen in "real life" but this is a movie and meant to be entertaining ... not a doco on submarine life.

Hope you are proud of the work you did and know it does entertain people.

How they screwed up the uniforms is well beyond me. I'll see the movie tomorrow and already dreading it. An officer wearing a chief;s hat? Come on, how difficult would it have been to get it right?

Actually I assumed Con in this context referred to 'conning tower'--used figuratively for anyone taking charge of that nerve center in a submarine.

Your reference refers to person. "I have the con" I know there is a gay theme in this movie but I didn't think it was THAT gay! :-)

reply

"I have the con" is a standard phrase used on all US navy ships regardless of class. It;s also used to a lesser extent on merchant vessels. "Con" is short for "control," rather than "conning tower."
