Argento's best film...

since OPERA??

i haven't seen this (tv)movie, but it seems that the first reviews are good!(imdb, dark dreams, nocturno, dre ad central...)
i can't wait for a dvd...

reply

It will be enough for me if it's better than THE CARD DEALER and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Those are the only Argento films I did not enjoy in the least.

it's very good indeed: quite fun in a homage / pastiche post-modern way (cf. "Scream"): lots of injokes relating to -surprise surprise- Hitchcock's movies (as well as his pale imitator De Palma). Unpretentious, not a lot of gore; certainly a d*mn lot better than the cringing "Card Player"!

Brilliant music, too, as well as the usual Dario visual touch when it comes to exalt the beauty of Roma's architecture.

aha... I see...
thanks for the correction. "Sleepless" also takes place in Turin.

PS: out of curiosity, is Argento a ASRoma fan? and Fellini? Leone?

reply

No, he's a Lazio fan (the other Rome team)

Greetings from a Juventus fan from Turin (the city Dario likes a lot to shoot in...)

Actually, the dark dreams response has been rather negative on almost all counts (I'm a member), and no, it isn't better than Il Cartaio, since that film's photography and camera-work was immeasurably superior. Best film since Opera? No way...you'll be very disappointed if you're expecting that. To be fair, it was only a tv movie and is entertaining when viewed as such. I still have high hopes for The 3rd Mother.

reply

i agree that "il cartaio" (and "Jenifer" too!) is better, but in my opinion "do you like Hitchcock?" is better than "sleepless" and of course "the phantom of the opera".
"do you like Hitchcock?" is an entertaining and fun tv movie, but nothing more.

reply

I actually liked Hitchcock more than Jennifer. Jennifer seemed to have little indication of Argento having directed it imo (bar the You Have Been Watching credit!), as for Sleepless, well the Goblin score and gore saves it. :)

reply

I think Dario Argento has got worse. There's no doubts. In my opinion "Deep red" is the best; I like Suspiria, too. The last movie (for theatre) "Il cartaio" is very boring. "Do you like Hitchcock?" is better than "Il cartaio", but this Argento isn't the old Argento... He's lost his terrifying touch.

reply

ciao, Juve!
no, really? a aptly-named-ss fan?? That really hurts.

reply

Dario Argento is going to prepare his new movie for cinema. It's the Third Mother after Suspiria and Inferno...

Argeno wrote the screenplay for Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time In The West.

I thought Do You Like Hitchcock? was quite decent if unspectacular. Decently written and acted but uninspiring, I don't think his heart was in the project. People here tend to completely dismiss The Card Player but I enjoyed it quite a bit and liked that film much more than Hitchcock. The Card Player at least had some definite highlights even if the film as a whole didn't compare to some of his best stuff. Hitchcock is a fairly slow whodunnit, with only one truly Argento-esque scene and a semi suspenseful finale. When you think about it; Hitchcock could have been directed by anyone with moderate filmmaking skill.

Argento's best since Opera? No way, Stendhal and Sleepless are miles above this film.

reply

yes,"Stendhal" and "The Card Player" are much better than "Do you like Hitchcock?" but this latter is better than "Sleepless".
"Hitchcock" has good acting from the leads,a nice music, some nice cinematography,a decent pace and a fun mood and story.
"Sleepless" has Goblin,a great opening scene, some effective murders scenes but the pace is boring, the cinematography is dull and most of the actors are terrible!

Stendhal: 8/10
Card Player: 7/10
Hitchcock: 6/10
Sleepless: 4-5/10

I love all the older Argento movies, I really don't like his newer movies.
He's gone a little mellow through the years I guess.
Phenomena, Suspiria and The Bird With the Crystal Plumage belong to my favourites.

I've reached the point where I can no longer buy Argento's films sight unseen. Although this is no worse than THE CARD PLAYER, it is definitely not the work of the master of the genre I once loved. I don't understand why his films looks so drab and boring these days. He no longer shoots widescreen or employs lush colors or interesting camera moves. It's like a different filmmaker (an imitator to the throne) has taken over Argento's brain and is still making movies trading on his good name. HITCHCOCK looked like it was shot on 16mm. It's grainy, ugly, poorly composed at times and just doesn't thrill. The killer is obvious from early in the story and his choice of male lead leaves us lacking in any sympathy. There are also huge continuity mistakes - like when Sasha is seen dancing in the window for the first time. At one point she's wearing her bra and then in the next moment she's not and then she's wearing it again. The whole film felt far more reminicent of warmed over De Palma than Hitchcock anyway. Even maestro Donaggio's score was a washout with all it's cheap electronics. A major, major disappointment. I think I'll just rewatch DEEP RED.

Didn't you like Stendhal? :)

I enjoyed the homages presented in the form of movie posters. My fave that I didn't notice the first time watching was one for OldBoy. I liked this movie quite a bit. I agree though, his newer films don't touch his classics.

reply

Opera was kinda weak in my opinion and I liked the Card player. I guess I'm just the odd man out. My favorite horror by Argento is Suspiria and my favorite thriller was Tenebre.

I have high hopes for the Third Mother. It's strange with argento. He'll write and direct these "almost" instant classics but then fail in some of his films in one way or another.

oh well, he's just a man, tackling a pretty difficult genre. But when he triumphs, he fargin' triumphs!

reply

It's his best film since he took a dump and filmed it.
