This film was an absolute disgrace compared to the book...

It really surprises me that Cornelia Funke allowed this to be released.

the movie was great. the book was very good.

Really? From what I've heard, she was very pleased with the adaptation. And rightly so: it remained faithful to the novel, retained the plot, and had a decent cast and score. It enhanced the spirit of the book, which is remarkable seeing as it was all done on a rather modest budget.

I mean, if you want proper disgrace, head on over to The Dark is Rising boards. That'll give you a real eye-opener.

I really enjoyed this movie, and I have loved the book for years. The only complaint I have is that grown up Scipio looked rather foolish, but besides that they did an excellent job. The characters were loveable, the script was well done, the sets were great for such a low budget movie.

Yeah Mrs fuke raved about it. There were a few things that they changed around, Scipio's age (which i thought was good because a. it made him hotter and made him more of a leader b. this way you could use the same actor for both parts), the ending where the Hartlieds come for Bo instead of abandoning him (i liked this too because it made for a more climatic ending and gave Scipio some power), and that Ida and Victor knew each other 9i did'nt disagree with this it gave ida a bigger part).
All in all it stayed pretty close to the book and it even had some lines from the book in the movie script whicj i really really liked because it made it so much more enjoybale. the only part i didnt like was when the conte and contess were made into children you heard their grownup voices coming out instead of child voices. I can see why they did this (so we know its the conte(ess) but i really wanted to hear a child's voice.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't read the book but plan on doing so. It will be interesting to view it the other way around from you all.
You get to see what was missed out and altered in the film and decide if you like the film as much as the book. I do the reverse and see what is added and if some scenes work better in written form, especially the relationship between the kids.

I agree with most of your comments. I thought the movie was a good adaptation of the book. Both are quite enjoyable. I read this book in between Harry Potter books on the recommendation of a friend who was also was a big Potter fan. I did not care for the adult voices either, but I think they were trying to be sure that people who had not read the book would 'get' who these kids were.

It's been about 7 years since I read this, but I don't remember the Hartliebs adopting Barbarossa. I was actually waiting for the ending for him that was portrayed in the book and felt a little let down by its absence. If you've read the book, you probably know what I mean, but if not, here's your spoiler warning: Do not scroll down if you plan to read the book.

That Barbarossa starts calling himself the Thief Lord. I just loved that and was hoping it would be in the film.
