Watched this quite recently

I didn't even know this adaption existed until I came across it on Netflix a few days ago! I haven't read the book for years, but it was one of my absolute favourites when I was younger. Seeing what became of Funke's "Inkheart", however, I tried to keep my expectations down.

And you know what? I was very pleasantly surprised. The plot of the book came back to me when watching the film, and I must say I think it was rather well done. Certainly more faithful to the book than Inkheart (or other modern Fantasy film adaptions which I'd rather forget). Many adaptions of modern Fantasy novels look and feel right but fail because of a poor script. I think the Thief Lord did really well in this regard. Rollo Weeks is great as Scipio, and I think I actually liked him more in the movie than in the book. I pictured Victor quite differently, but I like Jim Carter so that wasn't really a problem.

All-in-all, fine movie, even though it feels like it's aimed at children rather than young adults. Seeing it all come to life was very thrilling after having read the book so many times - and, of course, Venice is gorgeous.

7,5/10.

Agreed - a very good movie with good acting and special effects. 8 marks out of ten.
