Older Scipio

In the book, Scipio's about 12 or 13 and when he gets off the merry-go-round he's around 25. The Scipio in the movie looked about 14 or 15 but all the same, I thought they would just get someone older to play the post merry-go-round Scipio. Actually, I think I would have preferred this b/c I was a little surprised when they just tried to make him look older. I mean, they did a pretty good job of it, but I think it would have been better to just get another actor altogether for the older Scipio. (Also, in the book, it said that he was the spitting image of his father so that even Barborosso mistook him for the senior Massimo. Of course, the script was greatly changed in the book so that this part wasn't even in the movie but still you get my point.) I don't know, what do you think? Should they have gotten another actor to play the older Scipio or was the make-up, etc enough?

I never read the book. I thought they'd use an older actor, but of course, the didn't. I guess it took me about 15 seconds to get used to the fact, it's the same child actor. In sum, it didn't bother me after all.

Yeah, once I got used to it, it didn't bother me that much either. Still, I would have prefered another {older} actor to play him. someone like Ben Barnes or something.

i think they made the right decision. scipio wasn't older in a lot of scenes so it kinda makes sense that they would do it that way rather than finding another actor. also, rollo was 19 at the time so that could have had something to do with it. you know, casting someone who was in between the two ages so he could play the younger AND older role. (although, if they had cast ben barnes as the older scip, i might have had a different opinion. i happen to absolutely LOVE ben)

I suspect that finding another actor who fitted an older Scipio would be less than easy.

Never read the book but I just saw this movie and thought they'd have a different actor playing the older Scipio, as well.

Rollo Weeks was 17, almost 18 when he filmed this. I read that they wanted someone who could play both the older and younger versions. Whether that was to save money (the film had trouble with financing, I read somewhere) or because they thought it would be more believable, I don't know.

I just felt that Older Scipio looked like the young version with fake stubble walking on stilts or something.

So I guess I would have preferred someone older playing the role.
