Xmas

Is Christmas really as big a deal in Japan as it looks in this film?

reply

Why wouldn't it be?

reply

Maybe because Japan isn't a predominantly Christian country...

Aside from its name, Christmas is in no way, shape or form a Christian holiday.
Every single tradition about Christmas--from the date (3 days after the solstice) to its customs like singing, lighting candles, decorating trees, and exchanging gifts, etc--all predate Christianity by at least a millennium or two.

There's a similar question asked in "Tokyo Godfathers" board:
"Christmas in Japan" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0388473/board/thread/85283675?d=85283675&am p;p=1#85283675

I think you'll find some helpful discussion there.
