I didn't get this movie AT ALL

please someone explain to me some of the underlying messages or themes because for me it was just one big blur of weird events. Why did the guy who repeatedly kills his wive got a call from himself being chased by military guys. Why does Vinnie Jones keep asking people about their function in life?

***spoilers***

My take: I believe that this is a story of survivors. People who need to understand what their purpose is, and where to go from there.

Man who kills his wife a lot: He never appreciated her, how much she cared about him. She just wants her to see that he can't live without her. So she trys to smack it into him. She cooked him a feast and he never thanked her, so she HAD to beat him for that.
He had the dream about him asking himself for help because...
he needs help and he doesn't know how to get it, who to ask, but the only one to ask is himself. Only he knows what he needs to do. The military, to me, symbolizes the threat to his life, the way he feels like he can't survive this when she keeps coming back.

The woman who makes bad commercials: She hears everyone telling her that her work doesn't work, yet she ignores them and thinks she is so witty. When she loses all of her recordings of her ideas, she realizes that they were worthless to begin with and she needs to change direction in life.

The girls in the diner: The girl keeps having bad things happen to her while the other girl doesn't care much about it. It seems to me like a story of "$h!+ happens and you move on."

Vinnie Jones asks everybody what their purpose is because that tells him whether they are worth living.

The bird guy needed to reach his full potential and have a purpose even though his purpose seems worthless and of no use to his family.

I got cut off the other day...

The three robbers: One of them wants a real job. and the real ugly one obviously loves J. J seems very confused and alarmed by his constant stares. Turns out he is gay, and together they survive the incident in the suana, and now they can begin truly living, being content with who they are. And their friend becomes a business man.

The president of the company: He doesn't see what's really important. To him and his wife, a light bulb is a large focus of their day. He doesn't understand how his product could be introduced without being a boring ad.

The president and the two girls from the diner are the "+" to these 5 stories

You're overthinking it.

there's 5 storylines going on that end up getting intertwined.
1. Asano and his seemingly immortal wife
2. the gay burglars
3. the ad agency lady and her hypnotist boyfriend
4. the family with the hypnotized dad
5. the hitman with his translator

BTW where does Asano get a call from himself and gets chased by military guys? I know he gets Vinny Jones to kill his wife in the end but I don't remember the events you mentioned.

^^Agree with this^^

There's a ton of movies where the story lines intersect and there's a huge political or philosophical theme being explored via the separate stories.

THIS is the other end of the spectrum. 5 stories collide simply for the sake of watching 5+ stories collide in a movie.

PS: The phone call he gets from himself is when he's dreaming and is half awake and half asleep. He answers the phone to hear himself from his dream on the other end. It's just another 'haunting' moment from the (un)dead wife to mess with him, I think...

Even with an explanation I still would have no idea. I just don't know WHAT happened.
