They tolerated Natalie longer than I would have!

I would have told Natalie to leave after the first day. The fact that they were not invited to Sara's funeral would have been enough reason for me not to have had the welcome mat for her. Throughout the entire movie, all I could think was why they were putting up with her.

As for Sara, its obvious why she went as far away from her as possible.

Diane Keaton is a terrific actress but she played such an unlikable character.

yeah agree. they were pretty polite kids for being the obnoxious and
scoundrellous selfish brats they portrayed. on the other hand, maybe
they felt stuck with it, and the death was the main thing of the trip
at that point ... what else are you going to do.

or perhaps it was an example of what the writer thought it would be
good for people to do for each other in life, after all it turned
out to be a growing experience.

when one of the kids asked the mother for something to remember
sara by and she said - i don't think so, it made me really mad.
the mother was a mess, and the daughter was well meaning but had
been messed up too. it was an interesting movie, but certainly
hard to watch in places.

I wouldn't have let her stay at all, not even the first night. She didn't invite them to the funeral, and she didn't even ask if she could stay, just showed up. Uh-no. Sorry about the grieving and all, but she was a bitch.

Boy do I agree with you! She was an annoying a**hole, just like her daughter was. They all liked Sara so, maybe that's why they let that horrid mother stay. It just made me cringe as she insinuated herself into their vacation, their home, their parties and even their most private lives. Ugh.

As soon as I saw Keaton's fingernails in her opening shot while driving, I knew this was one shallow person. At least she got her uppance at the end.
