what is the deal with haley's parents + her old coach?

what went on there? why did her mom want her to go back to the old coach?

reply

Her mom had an affair with the coach... I'm assuming they were still dating after her parents divorce which is why she said it didnt look right if she was being coach by someone else. Since her mother was dating him. Basically her mom sucked. The judge said people who have *^&^&% parents. Was her dad bad too? He wasnt really in there though. Wasnt he just a victim of being cheated on

reply

i still don't get it.hardly a reason for her world to disintegrate, unless someone like tricia told her in the middle of an international gymnastics competition that she has always sucked as a gymnast & the only reason why she is there is b/c her mom is banging the coach. but that wouldn't make sense either b/c the dad it seems he's rich & shells out a ton of money for training

reply

Ummm, finding out your mother is a skank and having an affair. Your father knows and they are divorcing right before you go on a big stage? Yes that can have a huge emotional impact on a 16 year old....especially if she thought her family was perfect and she was treated as a princess growing up by both.

reply

how do you know she had a perfect family life?

reply

The way the character was written. As you said her father clearly had no problem throwing money at her. She had friends. was very pretty. She wanted to be an elite gymnist and her parents were willing to do what it took to get her there. Plus the line "Long enough for him to rip my family apart." Clearly in her mind she had a perfect family life before the world stage. Are you that dense?

reply

yes, i guess i am this dense...maybe if the film started off with what transpired at the world championships, i would understand better.i'd be more devastated if i injured myself or if my parents bought me a spot on the team that went to worlds. and i don't understand how she ruined the rest of the team's chance by abruptly leaving when all the coach had to do was put in the alternate. i don't think her character was written very well when it comes to this aspect.

reply

See, I have to disagree. In this way, her character was very well written. I have to assume that you've never had a major problem between people in your family if you can't understand how such a thing would 1) devastate you and stun you so much when you first found out that you couldn't focus and didn't care about anything else--even a huge competition you'd worked to get to and 2) why after that you'd always associate that competition and the sport with your family disintegrating and never want to do anything with that sport and rebel. Kids, teens, even adults rebel often because they want attention or they're hurting and want help or they're angry and want others to hurt like they do.

The point in *not* showing what happened to cause her rebellion was used for dramatic effect so you'd think she was just being a jerk or something and also to give a conflict with other characters, with the situation in general and conflict with self. Without withholding that piece of information there would've been no movie because there would've been no point because people watching the movie would've understood *why* she hated gymnastics now and why she didn't want to go back. And if you take that a step further and say that all the characters knew what had happened, first of all, there would've been less conflict and anger from people like Tricia and random strangers. In addition, the movie implied that Haley was living with just her dad, that her mom didn't even have visitation unless Haley wanted it--and she didn't. That's unusual unless there's been abuse--most often courts award custody to the *mother*.

So, consider all of that before you decide the character wasn't well-written in that way. I consider it to be the best-developed aspect of the character.

i haven't spoken to my parents & 1 sister since 2007. my other sister & brother i see on holidays & birthdays (sometimes). they are also not speaking to our parents & other sister. My world did not disintegrate b/c of it, it got much better. i admit, i will never understand this part of the movie & it will bother me everytime i see it. oh well. thanks for your insight though.

That's kind of the thing though. Obviously for you, not speaking to them didn't upset you in any way, in fact you say your life is better because of it. However, Haley did not react the same way in her situation. Obviously with her, in her situation, it was devastating for her. She thought her family was doing great and then suddenly it was like "BAM!! Guess what? Your families not perfect. In fact your mom had an affair with your couch and now your parents are getting divorced!" For her, that was a terrible thing.

This is my signature.

It's not really hard to understand. She found out her mom was having an affair with her coach and as a result her family was splitting up. As someone who has divorced parents, that type of thing can have a serious impact on someone, especially when they're young. If she's still a high school student in her teens, chances are 4 years ago she was just barely a teenager at the time and had what she probably considered a perfect life, completely broken by her mom & coach.

Sorry it's not good enough for you, but finding out something like that, right before you're about to go out on the biggest stage, at such a young age, could absolutely cause someone to freak out and quit. Especially if your coach is one of the people who caused the issue.

reply

Yeah...they really should have fully explained this in the movie, maybe in a confrontation scene between Vick and Hayley right after she botches her beam routine where she pretty much explains everything in the hallway before working out.....

Maybe next time you watch this you'll actually...watch

Totally agree with the dense admission.

It is definitely a reason for her world to disintegrate. She put all of her trust into her coach and worked with him for years, made it all the way to Worlds, and then she found out on the fourth floor that night that her mother was cheating on her father with him. Her parents were divorced and family was torn apart because of it. She had to give up her dream. Society today clearly doesn't value family but I do and Haley did, too.

reply

Having gone through something similar, I agree with jarn, thinking you have a nearly perfect family and a nearly perfect life and having that shatter in your face is not an easy thing for a 16 year-old. Especially because I was 16 when I first found out my mom was cheating on my dad with a neighbor I actually trusted so much, I was giving his son english lessons!

It broke my heart, I couldn't stop crying for days, my parents didn't divorce, to this point, I honestly don't know if my mom knows I know, and if my dad knows what my mom did, but I just started connecting all the dots and seeing all the clues after I found out, and it tore me apart emotionally, to the point where I can have a stable relationship for more than a year. I was sixteen, now I'm 25 and I haven't had a boyfriend for more than 8 months.

I spiraled from being a normal teen into a goth with cutting issues, basically, I was screwed up for years, I think I'm finally beginning to pick up the pieces of the mess that was my life, and I definitely plan on speaking to a professional, but money is tight, not everybody can afford therapy.

So yeah, it is entirely possible that she just broke down and decided to leave her whole fake world behind, maybe because she couldn't handle the news, or maybe because she wanted to hurt her parents and her coach as much as they hurt her.

It was kind of hard to understand exactly what was going on until I had seen the movie twice; they say things like, "Right before Floor at Worlds" and "THAT was for Worlds!" We as viewers don't know what "worlds" means. The characters spoke as if the viewer knew what it was, instead of spelling it out.

Very late to the party, but oh well, lol.
Even though it's been a while since I've seen this movie, I can still remember certain details that made this movie enjoyable and memorable for me.

As others have stated, prior to the events taking place in the movie, Haley's mom had an affair with her (old) coach. When Haley found out about their affair, it devastated her. She left a major competition without telling anyone exactly why. She basically gave up a dream of hers because both her mother and (old) coach betrayed her trust. Then, her (old) teammates for Worlds were left embarrassed and lost their chances for winning after a long time training. They despised Haley because she betrayed their trust without stating a reason for her departure. It was a situation Haley couldn't win.

With all that said, after Haley is arrested for vandalism and giving the options for her where she serves her punishment, there was only ONE gymnast trainer willing to take her in... Burt Vickerman. He just has a very bad reputation as a trainer. Her mom is not too happy about this, because of this reputation of his. Her mom goes out of her way to talk to Haley's old coach (the man she cheated on her husband with) who ends up offering Haley a spot in his gym to be trained. Unlike Burt, this coach has a good reputation and a lot of the gymnasts he's trained do very well in their careers.

So basically, old coach = successful and Burt = failure.
That's how Haley's mom, other gymnasts, other gym moms, and even the judges view the coaches.

yes, i guess i am this dense...maybe if the film started off with what transpired at the world championships, i would understand better.i'd be more devastated if i injured myself or if my parents bought me a spot on the team that went to worlds. and i don't understand how she ruined the rest of the team's chance by abruptly leaving when all the coach had to do was put in the alternate. i don't think her character was written very well when it comes to this aspect.

I agree with the poster who said it wouldn't have been that good of storytelling for the audience if the movie started off this way... and that her character was written well, because everything wasn't exactly spoon fed to us. We're suppose to wonder why Haley is going through the whole rebellious stage and get to know her throughout the movie as she develops. That way, when we start to like her, we find out why she left Worlds and ruined her teammates chances for winning. We sympathize with her and view the whole movie in a different way. We finally understand her sarcasm, her outbursts, and why she treats her peers the way she has. It was a subtle, but good dramatic twist for this kind of movie. I personally appreciated it.

The reason why the rest of Haley's old team felt the way they did about her was because Haley betrayed them. Haley was one of the best gymnasts and together they really had a shot for winning Worlds and then most likely going to the Olympics. They whole team had a lot of hope and faith that would be able to win, especially with Haley on the team. They were a team and only injury would most likely be a reason they wouldn't have hated her if she had to leave. However, that's not what happened. Haley just left them out of the blue, during the damn event itself, without a reason. Even though they did probably use an alternate, they lost Worlds, they lost their chance for the Olympics... all because Haley was their missing link for making it and she abandoned them.
