Did anyone else catch the Joanne/Burt thing?
One of my favorite parts of this movie was the relationship between Joanne and Burt. I get this father/daughter vibe between the two, like Joanne looks up to him and wants Burt's approval more than anything, even winning.
It's only really shown in three scenes, with a total of maybe ten or twelve seconds of screen time. It's one of those 'If you blink, you'll miss it' kind of things.
At the IG Classic, Joanne hugs Burt after her routine, and he hugs back, but only for a second and then pushes her away. Then when Joanne's mom wants to leave VGA, Joanne doesn't really protest until Burt tells her she's welcome to stay. And finally, after Joanne scratches, Burt is so proud that he high fives her and gives her a big, tight hug. It's not dwelled on too much, and a little glossed over, but these few scenes really show that all Joanne wants is for Burt to be proud of her. It makes you feel a little empathy for her, and brings a likeable quality to a character that, for the majority of the film is pretty rotten.
It's okay to love something a little too much, as long as it's real to you. -Gerard Way
