Actually, your remark makes me think of another film which is also very moving which sets during the 2nd world war. It is "A Time to Love and a Time to Die" by Douglas Sirk, from the E. Maria Remarque novel. Although the novel is much better, the cinematographic adaptation is great.

These two movies make us understand how war times deeply turn people upside down.
