What is that music?

It seemed like some of the music used in the show was familiar...does anyone remember what movie it may have been used in before? My gut says a 70's political drama, like "All the President's Men" or something. I'm NOT referring to the Brian Eno trailer music, but the "DING ding ding, ding ding DING ding ding, BOING!"

It's driving me crazy!

Thanks,

Shauna

BTW Excellent doc (and very good use of music)

i'm not sure about the ding, ding, boing!

you could try sticking through shazam.

one of the songs that is used over and over again in 'the power of nighmares' was covered by fantomas on the album 'the directors cut' cant remember which song title right now but that album is comprised of movie themes done in the style of mike patton, so that might get you started on your seach for some of that music

reply

It's by Brian Eno. A track called "Big Ship" on the Album "Another Green World"

Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion by Ennio Morricone from a classic Italian movie by the same name... great track and a great documentary BTW.

reply

Yeees! Thanks FreedomTickler! I remembered that "jingle" from my childood when I saw it on TV, but couldn't reconnect to the name of the movie.

death to videodrome!
long live the new flesh!

I think that the music you're referring to came from 'The Ipcress File' (1965) soundtrack by John Barry.

I am a big Bernard Herrmann fan and I noticed some of his music from Citizen Kane was used. In fact, I have a downloaded radio special that featured his music on my computer which I have listened to many times, and I matched the music from The Power oF Nightmares to this music in 2 instances:

In Part 2: The Phantom Victory, at these times Herrmann music is used:
22:59 - 23:11 Bernard Herrmann music from Citizen Kane (exact match found)
27:47 - 28:00 same Bernard Herrmann music from Citizen Kane (exact match found)
19:14 - 19:55 is also Bernard Herrmann music from Citizen Kane I believe

There was also this other music that sounded familiar. The only thing I could think of was the music from the movie "Halloween" (its too bad no one has come up with a way to transcribe/play music in forums).

reply

Sounds like John Barry's theme for "The Ipcress File." And, wow, is this a great documentary.

reply

The music you are refering to is from John Carpenter's THE THING, which while credited to Ennio Morricone was really written by Carpenter.

reply

WRITTEN BY CARPENTER?!?!!

- a fourth-rate minor talent... the music was by MORRICONE – THE WORLD'S GREATEST LIVING COMPOSER - in the "style" of Carpenter, but then, Morricone can write in the style of Mozart!! Could Carpenter? GET REAL!

THE MUSIC BEING ASKED ABOUT IS NOT BY BERNARD HERRMANN OR JOHN BARRY: IT'S FROM COP THRILLER '"INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN ABOVE SUSPICION"...

SOME OF "THE THING" (BY ENNIO MORRICONE !!!!) - don't you know about music publishing and copyright laws tor222? – IS ALSO USED ON THE DOC.

reply

Of course Ennio Morricone wrote the soundtrack for John Carpenter's The Thing. Apparently Morricone wasn't to trilled about having his music edited as it was in The Thing as Carpenter added his own musical snippets to the score, insulting to such a great composer. By the way the music wasn't written in the style of Carpenter, Carpenter himself changed the instrumentation to resemble his own work. The Original Morricone score is available on the soundtrack. Still it is a very effective piece that suits well the tone of The Power of Nightmares.

Well, here it is, straight from the horse's mouth (Adam Curtis):

I can't believe it. I was right about Halloween! But no mention of Bernard Herrmann. Unfair but typical.

reply

i can't believe it! you're all poring over every bit of music from the series, but nobody mentioned the most obvious and oft repeated cues!
they're from the soundtrack from the film "the taking of pelham one two three" by david shire. on the soundtrack cd they're tracks number six, "Fifty Seconds - The Money Express", and seven, "Conductor Killed - The Money Bag". just listen to the first two seconds of track seven, you can't mistake it.
by the way, this is some of the funkiest movie music ever written, and i recommend this cd very very highly.

reply

I can't believe this; I searched monthts for a particular song that was used in every episode and now I've found it! It's a kinda jazzy/classical piece and I got to know the name of the artist after I heard it somewhere on the radio. It's also from Ennio Morricone, but not "investigation of a citizen above suspicion". The song I'm talking about is called (or from the movie): "atto di dolore" and none of you guys here even mentioned it! It's a great song, download (I mean buy :D)it now!

reply

Aha! The 'Power of Nightmares' theme mysteriously popped into mind while watching "Duck you sucker", but this confirmed it:

I'm so glad you started this thread. I came by IMDB because I wanted to check out the BOING! too. I was pretty sure it was Morricone, but I couldn't place the film. I thought it probably came from a Leone film. Now I clearly must see (and hear!) "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" again. I love that score. It's goofy and kind of creepy at once.

reply

Are you sure that it was from "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion"? Does that score sound similar to his work for John Carpenter's "The Thing"? When I started reading this thread, I felt sure that, as another poster mentioned, potukmail was asking about Morricone's score for "The Thing". I haven't seen this magnificent documentary for a while, but I think The Thing's musical score was quoted at the end of the second hour.

reply

One of the tunes that is played repeatedly in TPON is by Royksopp and is called Alpha Male, I'm not sure if this is the one you're talking about.

reply

The theme from John Carpenters "The Thing" is definitely used in TPON.

All the songs can be found on the BBC website:-

The Power of Nightmares - first screened in Autumn 2004 - explored how the idea that we are threatened by a hidden and organised terrorist network is largely an illusion. It made extensive use of music as outlined by the series creator, Adam Curtis.
