question about the mother (spoiler)

i don't get it, why does the mother say she doesn't regret a thing?

reply

Neither did I
Are we supposed to guess that she was in the wheelchair as a result of her husbands push? And hence resents him for it?

reply

The mother is consumed by HATE. Probably she hated her husband even before the incident with the boy and that's why she denounced him to police instead of believing in him.
Besides since she got paraplegic due the injuries caused by her husband, then I'll assume she never could forgive him and as "Medea" (whose tragedy is mentioned by one of the siblings), decided to punish her own daughters once she couldn't keep punishing her husband. How she punished them? I think she knew always the truth but decided to keep it in secret until her death.

That's why she didn't regret anything. Actually I think she got disappointed once she realized her daughters discovered the truth.

I could hardly find a post that I could agree more. Simply perfect analysis.

reply

I’ve just saw it yesterday and your analysis is perfect. As the movie was (to me at least).

reply

Correct. The inference seems also to be that the father was unfaithful. Also boys cannot just undress in an office if the other person doesn't wish them to.

reply

Very good. Also, the title refers to the fact that the mother's life has been a living hell for decades, consumed by hatred and loneliness. In part, she also managed to make her daughters' lives hell, at least the film seems to argue that way. One daughter is in a tragically dysfunctional marriage, the other is an isolated spinster, the third one is engaged in a destructive, lopsided love affair with his married teacher.
