Driver License

Is it that easy to get a new driver license issued, without any proof of identity?

In the Netherlands(where I'm from) and many other countries, citizens are required to have their identification on their person at all times. So the issuing would be less likely to happen.

Not anymore. I just heard that they passed a law here in Missouri that you have to have your birth certificate to renew your license. That's insane. In the state of Kansas, they mail you your driver's license. How stupid is that? Then anybody could get ahold of it, get the info off of it and steal the identity that way.

reply

Here in Texas, they mail it to you as well.

In California you have to produce your birth certificate or passport, or green card, for obvious reasons (infestation of illegals).

In Nj it's insane
Its this weird point system.
That involves birth certificate, proof of resident, HS or college diploma, passport, marriage license or divorce certificate, its really insane.

I recently moved to a new state and it was extremely hard for me to get my license here. I had to have my driving record from the other state, my original birth certificate with a state seal, my social security card, 2 proofs of residence (utility bills or rental agreement,) and because my birth certificate of course, had my maiden name, I also had to have my marriage certificate with the seal. Even though my social security card had my married name on it, they still needed the certificate. I made the mistake of bringing in my marriage license, and that was the wrong thing, so I had to go back home (2 hour drive) and get the right thing. Then because my previous state drivers license had expired the month before, I had to take both the written and driving test again. LOL Talk about a pain. Never thought I'd be taking a driving test again in my 30s. I'll never move to a new state again, too much trouble!

what state did you move to and move from?

Frank wanted everyone at his parties, BUT everyone wanted Dean at theirs.

Im in Illinois and you take the picture and you leave the DMV with your new lisence with you. And all you need is your Social Security Card and Birth Certificate.

I live in Arizona, and the only thing you have to bring in to obtain a new license is a form of ID. You can also do it online, which is BULL CRAP, because anyone can steal your driver's license, go online, and obtain a duplicate. Aren't we trying to STOP identity theft here, people??

They are very sufficient here. You need 6 points total consisting of at least one primary source (birth certificate, adoption papers, etc.) and at least one secondary (diploma, social security card, ATM card, etc.) Each have different point values and bottom line...they need to equal 6. Typically, people bring along 3 means of identification. When I first went to get my license, I couldn't because I only had a copy of my birth certificate so I had to get my real one then come back. When my dad recently went to renew his, they gave him a hassle. His social security card has his middle initial. His birth certificate doesn't. He wasn't born with a middle name but chose one for confirmation, which was before he got his social security card. Bottom line, the names didn't match exactly, so he had to get a new card issued. My mom went to get hers renewed and she had their marriage license as a form of identification. However, for some stupid reason that I still don't know, they don't accept licenses from religious institutions...only those issued by the state. Needless to say, when I got mine renewed last week, I had more than enough means of identification because they're so picky. But when it comes down to it, I'd rather go through a hassle than be subjected to the higher risk of identity theft. And for the record, I think mailing licenses is outrageous! Exactly why can't they give it to you at the time? I'm glad they don't mail them here.

My mom told me that they used to mail them here too but that was a long time. They stopped back in the late 90s and now you don't even need picture ID to replace a license since your picture and info is already on the computer and it's just a matter of printing it up again so there was no way in hell Connie would have gotten Michelle's license here. I didn't even know some states still did the mailing thing. But like Michelle stated, the whole security thing is flawed since California (which is where this really happened) has fingerprinting with the licenses and if they were doing their job it would have never happened anyway as in with several things that happened in this incident. There was already an idenity fraud alert out when Connie got arrested.

I still pray for Lindsey Lohan.

I have lived in California all my life (except for 7 months -- I'll get to that part in a minute), so renewing my license has always been easy. Because it's a RENEWAL. (AndreaCapron got a replacement license -- also not hard to do in Maryland, apparently)

I moved to Virginia for a short time (I thought we were going to settle there permanently, so I got new ID). Getting a NEW license there was monumental. This little sentence is from their website:

If you are from out-of-state, DMV may exchange your out-of-state driver's license for a Virginia driver's license if you meet the identity, legal presence, residency, and social security requirements and Virginia's driver education requirements, if applicable.

I had to provide SIX documents to qualify!! They say this is since 9/11 and I understand that. I got my license.

But hubby had to go back several times and each time, his docs were "inadequate." They would not even accept a CERTIFIED copy of his military discharge!!! He gave up, saying that his CA license was still valid for a few more years.

We wound up coming back to CA (not b/c of the DMV, LOL) and now I regret that I got that ID, b/c I had to surrender my CA ID to Virginia. I have been back for two years now and I have not gone to my local DMV yet -- I think it's time I do that little thing :)

So, AndreaCapron -- THIS is what people are talking about: Hubby & I were born & raised in the USA. He served in the military to protect this country and he COULD NOT GET A DRIVER'S LICENSE because he did not have the required SIX forms of proof for the state of Virginia.

Of course, the heartbreaking thing is that 'we' are the only ones applying for drivers' licenses - 'they' drive without licenses anyway, or insurance, or due care and attention - so who needs a drivers' license, right??

I once saw a fender bender between some guy and a chinese woman, whose fault it was. When he tried to ask her for her insurance details, she said - and I quote:

"No need insurance, paid cash for car"

and tried to drive away. She was prevented from doing so, and had to await the arrival of the police, whom I hope threw the book at her.

I can't stand people who don't do things the right way - what makes them special citizens?
