Wish to see the full production of 'Grayson'

Have recently viewed the trailer "Grayson" by accident and it caught my interest in wanting to see the full production. I just became a member of IMDb and was hoping someone out there could direct to where I'll be able to purchase, download, view, etc. "Grayson". Thanks.

Unfortunatly, it's not a full film. What you saw is it. The owners of the rights to the characters will not let him make the full movie which sucks. IMO Grayson would have been better than any Batman movie after Batman Returns.

I would have to agree that this movie is one of the best fan films ever, and I also know that there are legal issues involved and thus is the reason that it can't be made. However, what I would like to know is what the legal issues are. What's the deal with DC and not wanting to at least buy the rights from the movie in order to make it a full-fledged film? Could it be because of the whole Robin/Nightwing issue? I just would like to know more about the details of why they got shot down so quickly. Thanks.

DC (and its parent company, Warner) doesn't have to buy the rights from anyone - the rights are theirs and John Fiorella was in rather blatant violation when he made "Grayson". They could in theory sue him, which is why he's unable to sell the movie to anyone - any profit he makes is legally the property of DC/Warner.

As for DC not jumping on this project, assuming they even care it exists, I'd guess its in large part to their ongoing "Batman" films, with the sequel to "Batman Begins" expected sometime in 2008 (some information is available here on imdb under "The Dark Knight", the film's working title).

Personally, I think "Grayson" is an excellent basis for a TV series, with far more promise than "Birds of Prey" had, since that series got bogged down in teen-girl "Buffy"-ish angst.

reply

I also came on here wondering about where I could see the full film. So the five minute long trailer is all that exists, am I right?

reply

personally i think DC pulled the plug on fan films because their worried the fans will show them up. Grayson, World's Finest, and Batman: Dead End are all great pieces of work

reply

no, not a full length feature film with Dick as the star. He should be in the new Batman Begins series. only without the colorful costume and a more darker tone.

reply

this is how you make a comic book movie!!! instead of *beep* like elektra, daredevil, & ghostrider; this is what fans want to see!!!. dc should hire untamed and make a full length film.

I saw the trailer on YouTube the other day and would love to see afull production as well. I do hope that any and all legalities can be ironed out with DC so this could get the green light.

I have been loving this project since I ran accross this footage a few years ago. After reading the comments, I would agree that this would be a good movie/TV series to make, but alas it won't happen due to Studios, Production houses, writers, and Comics companies all wanting to put their spin/touches on it, which in turn takes a masterful piece like "Grayson" and turns it into something that would be better left flushed down the toilet. If DC was smart and I'm not saying they are, though they have good talent working for them, the company as a whole would back this small studio/production company and let them run with it. Look at Smallville for instance and what they have done with the introduction of Green Arrow, Impulse, Cyborg and Aquaman. Grayson is nodifferent in the use of the various heros shown in the clip. For Years I have heard rumors of a "Justice League" movie and I have to say that if ever there was to be one the team which created the masterpiece "Grayson" should be allowed to do it.

reply

I totally agree. Grayson is an astonshing peice of work and the film makers are only using a variation of the "original" Robin story. In the 60's the original Batman and CatWoman were murdered by a gang and Dick Grayson kept up his Robin Identity in rememberence of his mentor.

If you mean the Earth 2 Batman and his wife, Catwoman, those were actually published in the late 1970s. In DC Super Stars 17, Catwoman was accidently killed in a fight with Batman and a former associate, Silky Cernak, resulting in Batman burning his costume and retiring for a year and their daughter, Helena Wayne, to become the Huntress and capture Cernak. A year later (comic book time), in Adventure Comics 462, Batman died when he donned a spare Batman outfit to go against Bill Jensen, a flunky of Frederick Vaux. He supposedly never knew the Huntress was his daughter, though I personally feel he might have and never revealed that he did, just because he's Batman. (I have both issues, and damn, were they hard to find...) Like the film, Robin was left to carry on, along with the Huntress. Robin wanted to become the new Batman, but the Huntress prevented him, telling him that only Bruce could be Batman. Robin made sparodic appearances until his death, while trying to save the Huntress, who also died, in the last issue of Crisis of Infinite Earths.

I just saw Grayson for the first time. It was fantastic. Why can't DC see the light here? I'm reading the screen play now. Talk about a trip down memory lane! Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman...it is like a big reunion. Actually in the screen play the Hall of Justice comes to life.

I can understand protecting the Batman franchise. But couldn't DC twist the story a little? Maybe Batman is faking his own death for another purpose....or the dreaded "dream sequence" where Robin wakes up at the end and none of it never happened. That would stink but I would love to see this movie or some kind of Hall of Justice movie be made.

Where can I find this trailer? I tried google searches and found nothing. Help!

reply

found the trailor on utube. just type in Grayson or Batman Death.

I can not do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all the good that I can do.

Even though I know this will never be made into a full movie, I have just one wish...

That they'd release a download so you can burn your own "DVD" of this to watch on a stand alone DVD player. Even though it's just a trailer... having the trailer and the screenplay on the same disc would be awesome, and torrenters could distribute it free.

It'd be awesome!

On the legality of making a full feature film from the trailer, DC would have no legal foothold if no money were made from the production of the film. I'm guessing no one made money for the trailer, and if they continued in that vein they could make the whole movie. But no one wants to work for free, unfortunately, so this is likely the last we'll see of this film, which was pretty well done. I would love to see the full version.

reply

Who knows, but I'm just talking about a DVD of the trailer being distributed. Currently it seems the only way to view it is to download it from the internet to your computer to watch, and it's really only for people with broadband to get the good quality version.

I just saw the trailer the other day, and it was pure, concentrated awesome. I know it will never be a full length movie...but i can dream...

Hollywood is full of idiots if they dont see what a GREAT movie this could be!! This director did one heck of a job...BEATS both Burton and Shoemaker!!

reply

I think the problem with making this a full production is the story itself. Personally, I'd love to see it. But the story requires people to know too much about the DC universe which makes it viewed as 'too esoteric' for public consumption, ie. profits.

reply

I'm still waiting.......I like the story line, I read the script and it has so much potential.......The fact that Barbara Gordon ( Batgirl) is walking and fighting again is great!!

I love the Batgirl and Robin stories...... I wish DC would just buy it and let the guy make this already!!!

"DC would have no legal foothold if no money were made from the production of the film."

I'm not sure about that - there are still copyright and trademark protections this short may have violated.

reply

That's correct. Under US copyright law, failure to protect the use of a copyrighted property - by taking legal action and otherwise denying use of properties by unauthorized persons - may lead to the voiding of the copyright and the entry of the work/characters into the public domain. In other words, if DC doesn't stop others from unauthorized use of its characters, *for whatever purpose*, DC can lose ownership of the characters. If anyone can then make a Batman movie, DC/Warner Communications loses lots of money. Also, the first person to create a piece of work featuring those characters can then file for copyright protection, preventing DC from using its own characters!

Ignoring the issue of copyright, DC/Warners is not going to let the creators of "Grayson" make the feature because, as mentioned by others, it's a complicated story requiring extensive knowledge of the DC universe. Also, "Grayson" really isn't that good. For a fan film it's great, and we love to see a fan make good, but as a production it's pretty amateurish, not even up to the standards of Robert Rodriguez's "El Mariachi." To create a professional-looking film, John and the rest of his crew could not be the core team. They just don't have the background and experience with the scale of production this would involve. You don't send a man with some experience doing local commercials and a few shorts into a $100 million dollar production. Which is sad, because it they were experienced filmmakers I think John's group could do a good job with "Grayson."

reply

Nothing came of it, or Fiorella and most of the cast. That was a pity because the concept held promise and it wasn't as amateurish as you thought. It needed better actors and directing, but a full-length movie would have been good. Fiorella has pretty much faded into oblivion as far as I know.
