hollywood remake?

I want to see this on hollywood remake, remakes from america are in nowadays!!!

reply

well, not this one.

this movie is a already a hash of all the asian horror movies combined. very unoriginal. i'm sure hollywood would never even think of remaking this crapola.

Throwing sainthood all around!

reply

How is it unoriginal? Tell me, what film did it copy?

reply

[deleted]

no it's not. it's not a crapolo. It is very nice in remake. All are "a little bit" . Don't u know that every movie you made is just taken from this movie?

Like some scenes in:

Into the Mirror
The Eye (2005)

U, urself the american re-make of THE RING is such a waste of time. Like The Others, no thrills, no chills! But this one gives me.

Yeah. Some are ripped-off but it was powerful. Yeah some scenes are ripped off, but it is scarier than the movies you've said.

reply

Tell me, which part(s) of these movies were you referring to?

A little bit of Ring
A little bit of The Eye
A little bit of The Grudge
A little bit of Six Sense
A little bit of The Others

And let us know what you would have done differently for those scenes in Feng Shui that you claimed were copied from the movies listed above to make it more original.

Enlighten us please?

reply

[deleted]

also, almost ALL of american movies is DISAME. Like the movies about Werewolfs, Zombies, Masked Killers, Monsters, Sharks etc. and so, almost of the foreign films are ripped off. so tell me, if Feng Shui rip off The Others, Sixth Sense, why HOLLYWOOD keep re-making ASIAN FILMS??????????????????

reply

First of all, what's "disame" mean?

Secondly, Hollywood keeps remaking Asian Films with ORIGINALITY. Feng Shui does not have ANY originality, and it is not scary AT ALL.

reply

it's not scary at all? well? not all of your films or SCARY like that. Like u said that "The Others" is scary? hell! I fall to sleep waiting for scary scenes! gosh it is a sleepy movie! I mean DISAME because all of your movies have DISAME THEME. Like Masked Psycho Killers, Werewolfs and it's boring.

Secondly, those asian films are NOT famous here in Phils. so why does we copy it? almost all of asian films here are FLAP so why does we copy it?

reply

When you use taglish like that, it's no wonder the poster before you couldn't take your comments seriously.

Are you reading what you are writing? Where in the Sixth Sense, Poltergeist, Exorcist, or any of the Hollywood horror movies worth mentioning include zombies or masked killers? When you generalize the horror industry in such a manner, it hurts the flimsy logic you have in your arguments.

And when you tried to refute wiggy's comments on remakes, all you did was repeat yourself like a broken record. Leave the art of conversation to people who can present their ideas coherently.

On to the matter at hand:

It is obvious that Asian cinema, particulary Japanese and Hong Kong/Mainland Chinese cinema, are beginning to receive a lot of attention. I see nothing wrong at all with the Hollywood remakes of these films, as long as they're not bastardized. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all; hell, Tarantino does it all the time. These Asian films don't have to be famous in the Philippines to be appreciated by horror buffs in the Philippines. There are some other foreign horror flicks that are not appreciated in the mainstream audience, but it doesn't make them any worse; in fact, some of them are quite good, even better than The Ring or The Grudge. The writer and director obviously saw something good in those horror flicks and decided to create one to suit the Filipino audience, something that the Hollywood execs did here with The Ring and The Grudge, and is doing with original stories like the upcoming White Noise. To lambast those Hollywood remakes, and then to turn the other cheek and praise Feng Shui would be considered hypocrisy.

As for Feng Shui itself, I don't think it can match up to the much more popular and better Asian horror movies. The oft-copied visual style is there, as well as the "cursed inanimate object follows you to your grave" story, but it lacks much of the sense of dread and psychological scares that a movie like, say, Cure, delivered. I also found myself unable to connect with the story or any of the characters, which is always a bad sign in any kind of movie.

But even The Grudge was able to do without the "connection" (it wasn't so much a movie with a plot as it was a good haunted house in an amusement park) and still delivered some memorable moments. It was able to do this because its scare scenes were fresh (not quite original, but still refreshing) and well-delivered, but Feng Shui's scares are just tired and rehashed, delivered in the same manner. The music stops, the person turns around and sees ghastly figures moaning something awful and walking slowly towards you. Hey, that kinda sounds like a zombie movie! And Feng Shui's take on the "Ghost lady dressed in white" (Sadako in Ring, Kayako in Grudge) is just too laughable to be scared at.

The movie isn't totally without merit, however. I still remember the old campy, corny Filipino horror movies about aswangs and chanaks (the equivalent of vampires, monsters, etc. in the Philippines; once again, hypocrisy on samara's part, since he called the Hollywood horror industry crappy because they were based on the very same staples), and Feng Shui is leaps ahead of those movies, even if it's basically an imitation of other Asian horror. One can only hope that the rest of the Filipino film industry can catch up and move further.

what's the big deal on having Hollywood remake this film. For crying out loud, Hollywood is not the home of genuine films. and having them to do a remake of Feng Shui is not something to boast. the only reason why Hollywood keeps on remaking Asian Films because they ran out of ideas already. havent you heard of the lin "that's so Hollywood"...pertaining to something very unrealistic.

reply

Amen. I completely agree. I don't see the point on having an argument on whether to remake this film or not. I do think there's no such thing as 100% film. There will be an inspiration from the others. I'm a filipino and I do think this film is good but not that great to boast of and certainly not that bad to call it 'crapola'. There's much worse than this.

reply

I'm filipino (filipina) too and I am on a "prowl"/ "look-out"/ "search" for some really good tagalog movies, could you please direct me to some or recommend me some?

I went and looked and found more bad than good filipino movies out there. It's kinda sad because, even though they have their own share of really bad or just average movies, I find more examples of good films coming out from Japan, Korea and China.

reply

And that is why I just don't watch tagalog movies anymore. I gave up.

reply

I just recently revisited this movie since the first time I saw it was some years ago. Maybe I thought my judgement would be different, perhaps better, due to me understanding our culture a little bit better (I didn't grow up in Pinas). And also because The Road, from the snippets I saw, was, I thought, a good film. An exception. Anyways, back to Feng Shui.

I still hate it. It's stupid. One problem Filipino film-makers have is that they have very good concepts or premises to begin a story or form a film with but they have no idea how to bring these visions or ideas to life. They don't understand mise-en-scene or general film language. Makes you wonder, how could they communicate if they don't know the basics?

The problem I first perceived and then remembered after seeing Feng Shui is that at first the killings, in its own Universe, was logical. Someone dies and then Kris Aquino's character gains/ benefits in return. Somewhere along the movie this plot point is disregarded. Multiple killings/ deaths happen and she gains nothing in return. For some viewers this just registered as a point onto which the audience should (further) sympathize with Kris' character because she's having such a hard time. BS! As if this character plot point isn't already established! And top it off, audiences are treated with multiple scenes of Kris trying to act, when in reality, she's just doing what other "accomplished" Filipino actresses are known for, just crying..... As for her character, she's really unlikable. Weak and helpless all the time. Plus, there isn't a sense of urgency with her. It's like she's just plodding on because the script demands her to because the story needs to be long. As a character, she's without pulling or needful purpose.

Then there's also the cliche and stereotypical two-dimensional husband and the briefly-visible-on-screen mistress. Also, Kris' character's friends are stupid.

The concept is good, the exposition is really, really poor.

Btw, have you seen the homage film Rigor Mortis? Chinese Horror film.

reply

This movie was not crapola. And it is true. Brad Pitt's film company expressed interest in getting the rights to remaking this movie. And it's not entirely unoriginal. The bagua idea is actually very original and was a nice touch.

reply

[deleted]

I hope they'd make a remake, cause I can't recall any Filipino movie that was remade by Hollywood.

"Of course I'm in love with you. Now come sit down and eat."

reply

I've said this before and I'll say it again... there is no totally original film because all of them have influences. It just bothers me that people always seem to think that Filipino Films are not original and just copied stuff.

It's like when Filipinos do it, even if done well, they say that it was copied or a rip off of something.
On the other hand, when other countries do it, they say Oh it's in the tradition of..." Or "it's in the same vein as..." or "there were scenes when the director paid tribute to the director of this film..." or ... those were an homage to films of yesteryears..."

It's just a stupid mentality. The immortal scene from Untouchables wherein Costner saved the baby stroller from falling from the stairs while still shooting in a gunfight was taken from an earlier film! The Sopranos copied the style of Good Fellas! The Magnificent 7 was a Western The Seven Samurai! Mr. and Mrs. Smith had True Lies elements in it! Kung Fu Hustle was similar to The Matrix, a so-called original movie, but copied a lot from the Story of Jesus Christ right down to the cross-like stance in the end of Revolutions!

Those films mentioned that feng shui was said to copy from are they original? Let's see...
The Ring- a movie about a girl who possessed a tape and kills everybody who watched it... it's just a juiced up version of all Chain letter movies i've seen.

The Grudge- A house that is haunted. Wow. Original!

The Eye- a girl gets eyes and sees what the old owner of the eyes, a clairvoyant, see. even hollywood has done those before.

Jeez. I just don't like it when people watch films with the intention to criticize only and has really no intention of enjoying a film.

reply

actually, FENG SHUI was rather ORIGINAL in terms of execution. even the lousy South Korean flick, THE DOLL MASTER already had its rights secured by some American studio for a Hollywood remake. that said, what more if FENG SHUI premiered not only in parts of other countries with heavy concentrations of Filipinos, but instead, was purposely ADVERTISED in foreign tv channels (instead of just in TFC) in other countries for foreign audience as well?

***SPOILER***

i mean, im sure FENG SHUI had WAY more originality than Korea's FACE (it had a Sadako-Kayako lookalike villainess in it, dressed in white and her face behind her long black locks), DEAD FRIEND aka THE GHOST (this one had a Sadako-coming-out-of-the-well like scene near the end of it), etc. right?

***END OF SPOILER***

and instead of just bashing it all the way, why don't you try and make your brains realize (now THERE'S an idea) that its actually a LEAP from your usual really-low-budget-with-equally-low-film-stock-quality-plus-a-really-laughable-plot Filipino horror flicks. and the quality of the film stock used for FENG SHUI was bright and clean -- no black spots at all, though it seems left unnoticed. and especially the sound -- i mean, you really CAN'T just compare it with any of those usual (and HIDEOUS) pre-recorded ("awooo!!!") wolf sound from the those previous unbearable attempt at horror film making.

but to make it short, FENG SHUI had way BETTER production values than any other Filipino horror movies ever made -- or i've seen. so far, that is. at least try to appreciate, or even NOTICE that fact. sure the movie wasn't ENTIRELY original (hell, it's supposed to be Asian style, right?!) and it may HAVE borrowed scenes originally seen from previous Asian horror flicks but that's NOT all there is with this movie -- which you would have (or SHOULD have) noticed, if your eyes and ears (minds? or should i say brains...) were REALLY (and i don't LITERALLY mean THAT so don't you DARE act cute) or TRULY open while you were watching AT ALL....really.

end of my ranting...for now. ;)

reply

I agree with you on the appreciation you stated. ;)

It would be much understand/appreciated if the one watching this movie is "highly sensitive". This movie delivered its purpose/objective perfectly because of the culture it has.

To those who did not appreciated the movie, I understand.

Hollywood remake? BADUY! HAHAHAHA. Americans do not have superstitions. The target audience of the movie is limited to the asians or to the chinese/filipino-influenced audience. A big question mark will be seen on my face if I watched a remake of this movie. A caucasian house has a bangwa????? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. (Not only a question mark, laughter!)

The remake would be comedic, instead a horror.

reply

yeah! BADUY! I can't even imagine a JENNIFER ANISTON holding a bagua screaming around?! what a funny movie.....Hollywood has been lack of ideas making of horror films....so they're juzz remaking asian films....sooo, they called it remake so it isn't too OBVIOUS that they will rip-off the story, scenes etc.

4 the one who said that HOLLYWOOD remaking asian films ORIGINALLY:

I have never heard a REMAKE movie withought RIP-OFFING all the scenes....better consult webster!

The Ring was a re-make of Japanese movie called RINGU. That's that...end it! Period! Almost all movies are linked to one another.

reply

The only reason they're in is because Hollywood is falling apart. C'mon - The Amityville Horror remake, House Of Wax remake, The Ring remake, The Grudge remake, Shall We Dance remake, Dark Water remake...and there's more to come (remakes of The Eye, A Tale Of Two Sisters, Oldboy, Phone, Kairo, Audition, Infernal Affairs...)

Feel free to rant at me for bringing up remakes again, but honestly I wish Asian cinema would get more acknowledgment and perhaps properly advertised cinematic releases. I would have loved to have seen A Tale Of Two Sisters in the cinema (it probably was released in cinemas but with little to no publicity)

reply

A remake? Hehe, that's funny. I mean, simply looking at it PLOT-wise, imagine a Caucasian with a Bagua? Although Astrology is popular in the USA, Feng-Shui isn't.

Feng Shui is okay as a Filipino film, after all, the Chinese have been in the Philippines for centuries, thus the influence to certain Filipino beliefs. But if Feng-Shui's storyline is to be set in America, characters to be played by Causcasian stars, I don't think it would be that convincing. They would have to make many adjustments and changes to the story. It's cultural context etc.

I have nothing against a remake if somebody really did express an interest, but I believe it would be a challenge. Definitely a risk. But I think the film's best kept the way it is. Untouched. There are already too many remakes out there, especially the Horror genre. And it gets tiring after a while.

Just my opinion. From a Filipino point of view.

reply

"Don't be rude. When I read your post saying, "better consult webster!", you seemed to be really smart.. NOT! Watch your grammar, especially when you post something as critical as that! "I can't imagine A Jennifer Aniston...", lol! So, how MANY known Jennifer Anistons are there in your world? If I remember it right, there's only ONE Jennifer Aniston in HOLLYWOOD (at least in MY world)! "Hollywood has been lack of ideas making of horror films." -- I can't even explain how you came up with that sentence, nor can't I see how! YOU better consult WEBSTER yourself.. And, by the way, when did a REMAKE not appear OBVIOUS? I mean, when someone calls a movie a "remake", EVERYONE can EASILY tell that it's a remake, as in a "borrowed idea", as in "not the original", as in "a remake"..!"

Really? Wow! I was soooooooooo hurt on what you say.<<<<If you believe in that sentence then you have mind problems. I don't need to consult webster, oxford or any useful dictionaries, cause I learn it on SCHOOL (you know what SCHOOL is?)

As for the hollywood remake things, accept it. Hollywood has been lacking on ideas, so they will say that they will remake this they will remake that.....oh come on....

reply

Last time I heard, Tom Cruise and his wife's (Forgot her name) compnay is planning to remake Feng Shui.

"As for the remake things", it's either Americans don't like reading subtitles while watching a film so there would have to be an American version of it (In which case I'd feel glad that we know better) or their film companies just don't allow the Asian hits to have theatrical releases, so they can instead remake the Asian hits and make money.

reply

so which movie is entirely original (aside from the first few movies ever made, of course)?

reply

1st,the movie was quite scary enough.. i think, the Asian touch was there, it suppose to have that because we are asian. Forget all those imitation things you are talking about because you miss understood linkage of culture and beliefs as unoriginality.
2nd, Dont compare it with the ring because if Feng Sui had scared me.. The Ring had took me into an undefeatable drowsiness. It was somehow boring at some point..
and 3rd, The actors had good credits in acting.. even Kris, copared to those Horror flicks you mention.
I give Feng Sui a High 5!!!!

****I think you are suppose to comment on the Remake Theme of this post and not on others comment****

reply

let's not make it sound like we are dying for a Hollywood remake of pinoy films. we should be contented that a quality film was made, at least. pushing for a remake is quite a desperate move, and it further elevates hollywood into the superior film industry which it really isn't. we should actually be wary of hollywood for remaking so many contemporary asian films. on the brighter side, it proves that asian cinema is still the best, we just do not have that massive media hold.

reply

nah! stop this trifle all of you. i think its not getting any remake at all. there isn't even a Rabbit bus in the states, or a Red Horse beer (anyone who watched the movie would know what i mean). well, they might think of something else or change the death scenes but it would erase everything Filipino about it. just look at The Ring remake. it was a totally different movie (no hints of it being a jap remake) unlike the Grudge where it retains its setting. Feng Shui should rather stay Filipino for it is effective (but not so) in this context. it a pretty decent movie but hey, it's not even that good. perhaps its just that hollywood takes all risks. and if they're risking on this one, they ought to do it better.

reply

well, i just found out that the FILIPINO movie 'SIGAW' where angel locsin starred in would be REMADE into an american film! so stop all this crap!

reply

this movie is crap...totally overated. the reason this one sells to most filipino people because this movie was made by one of the biggest (if not the biggest) broadcasting company here in the philippines. and the leading star is one of the network's biggest (and obnoxious) stars. people thought this is original because they haven't seen other asian horror movies. the only ones they seen are ringu, ju-on, dark water, the eye, etc. in fact, i know most of these people haven't seen the first two ju-on tv movies. the ju-on movie that was released in 2003 is actually the third of the series, but that is another story...

reply

>>i know most of these people haven't seen the first two ju-on tv movies.<<
Yeah, that's because no one else but you owns a TV and DVD player. I bet most people dont even have a Blockbuster in their barrio.

then how come many people are buying DVDs from pirates if they don't have a DVD player and a TV?

reply

Why does Hollywood always have to do remakes of Asian movies? If the original is perfect, why make a remake of it? Can't americans read subtitles? I live in Sweden and most swedes I know prefer the original subtitled movies. Perhaps because we're used to most things we watch not being in our mother-tongue.
