Careless ***Spoiler***

Leading off with a few thoughts...

I really enjoyed this movie. The acting was superub (I wasn't expecting much in the beginning). I'm surprised that this isn't available to a larger viewing audience. I think most would enjoy it.

The one thing I don't understand is why Richard paid Susan (a.k.a Naomi) with checks during their time together. I know he ran out of cash in his wallet but I thought it was careless since checks are far from being a private form of transaction. Plus he's a cop...comeon' Richard!

This movie had some very humorous scenes too. My favorite was when Richard's wife comes to Naomi's flat while they're playing Monopoly:

Richard: Who was it?
Naomi: Just your wife.
Richard: Ha..me wife. How'd you know it was me wife?
Naomi: She mentioned it in passing.
Richard: (Long awkward pause) Is she still there?
Naomi: (Leaves room to check door, comes back in room) Yep.

8/10

I guess Richard didn't really care. He was probably willing to spend a lot of money on his 'quest'.

I am under the impression that UK bank statements don't show who the cheque was paid to simply that the money going out of the account is from a specific cheque (the number is shown).

I'm currently working on a client site that is a major clearing bank - they only put the cheque number on the statement. I bank with a different clearing bank and it's the same.

Obviously, payments would be going into Naomi's account from Richard's bank and there would be a paper trail of paying in slips.

Even if he drew cash from his account his wife would have become suspicious as to where the money was going.

I think it was to show how he trusted her, he wrote two blank cheques. Also showed that what he was "getting" didn't have a price, money was irrelevant. Maybe also he felt pity for Susan's circumstances. Great ending when he gave her the cash that he owed from the monopoly game.

My understanding was that the cheques were made out in the amount of 100 quid, they were only blank where you write who it's for, since he didn't know her real name. She did have to trust him though, to some degree, that the cheques wouldn't bounce.

As far as why he wrote the cheques in the first place, I agree that he just didn't care, either about the "money trail" so to speak or the money itself, he just desperately wanted answers and he wanted them then and there, so a cheque was his only recourse.

I just watched this last night. Wasn't there a scene at the end where you can see that she hasn't cashed/paid in the cheques? I'm 99% sure that she hadn't done anything with the cheques. His wife found out because of him using the same cash point at similar times. She would have just followed him, or waited there till she saw him. I think most people seeing that someone was taking out money regularly from a Soho cash point would think that they are frequenting some sort of place that he shouldn't be.
