Why were those who tried to help restrained?

During the attacks, James held back Lucy, who tried to help her daughter Betsy. Later Richard also prevented her from helping. Both times the men would say "no, no." Why would they prevent Lucy from helping? Was the spirit forcing them to do that? Otherwise, it doesn't make sense.

The father was raping his daughter. He was the evil that the daughter could not face.

As someone who has seen spirits all my life and even been attacked by a demon I’ll explain what I know from experience.

The main reason people are discouraged from helping someone being attacked by a demon is because they put not only themselves but everyone else at risk of being harmed. A demon attacks someone as a way to show power and control. They also often attack the weak which is someone young, with a mental illness and/or a physical illness. It doesn’t take much energy to attack someone weaker than you. So if someone strong like the father or even a group of men try to help they are actually giving the demon more strength and energy. This is of course a bad thing.

I know it’s hard for others to understand but demons seek attention and any attention you give gives them more power. This is also why you don’t use forms of communication with the spirit world.
