Mr T rejected a cameo in this movie!

There's a video in which he talked about it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypkX_QdPsbw

And considering Dirk did the cameo and presumably weren't pleased with the end results, I think Mr. T was the smart one not to do it in the first place.

You're probably right. I didn't see or hear Dirk's comments about the way he was used in the movie though.

I meant Dirk and Dwight. Originally after they did their scenes they were told it was cut, so they got paid and weren't even going to be in the movie, then they were told they were put back in the movie, and Dirk didn't see it, one of his sons did though, and Dwight saw it, and neither of them was pleased with the fact that their scenes were in the theater pushed back till after the credits, and I don't blame them because do you have any idea how many people DON'T stick around till the end of the credits? But either way they both agreed that they would've preferred having an actual role instead of this cameo spot.

It almost sounds to me as if the makers of this movie were trying to calm down original series fanatics by throwing a bone to the original cast. After reading your comments, I get the impression they might not have been all that concerned about the fans or the stars of the original series. What do you think?

reply

Well I do agree with Dwight and Dirk, it was the movie people trying to reel fans in by saying 'look the original members are in it' but they really weren't, a 10 second spot, and at the far end of the movie, what the hell? And they'd both originally had like a 30 second spot each and instead they were chopped down to 10 or 14 seconds, that's really what the hell?

That's what it sounds like. I once saw part of the movie on television, didn't care for it, and turned it off.

Hey, Dirk and Dwight got more than David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser got in the film version of 'Starsky and Hutch'. That's what cameos are like, and they know it. I think a lot of this hype about them not liking what happened with their cameos is just that. Besides, in the extended version, their cameos are in the correct places. I will say, however, that the angle for Dirk's shot didn't do him justice. <sigh>

reply

I think that Mr T would have accepted a role if it would have been a more supporting role rather than just a brief walk on cameo which was why he turned it I believe.

reply

Dirk Benedict did not appear at the end of the film as I recall.

Mr T probably had a more pressing engagement in the UK, where he seems to get a lot of work!

Its that man again!!

In the theatrical release, Dirk and Dwight's cameos were 'stingers' placed after the closing credits. In the extended version, the cameos are in their proper places in the film.

reply

Yeah but the theatrical release is when everybody goes to see it so WHAT was the point of putting them after the credits, which by the way most people do NOT stick around to watch? As soon as the credits start, 90% of the room is going to clear out, any idiot would've known better than that.

reply

I can't answer that. I can only offer the theory that it was done so that people would hang around to acknowledge the efforts of the hundreds of people who contributed to making the movie they just enjoyed watching. Those who don't stick around for the credits miss out, that's all.

I like to watch the credits, because I come up with some interesting information. For instance, I like an old British radio comedy called 'The Navy Lark', in which the idiotic navigating officer was played by Leslie Phillips, a fine comedic actor. My son spotted his name in the credits of 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone', as the voice of the Sorting Hat.

The stinger in 'Battleship', therefore, served a double purpose: the acknowledgement, plus the set-up for a possible sequel.

reply

Yeah, you're right. What Marvel and Disney are doing with the Ironman, Captain America, Hulk, Avengers, etc. with having extra scenes after the credits is wasteful. No one's gonna stay to watch those...:)

The Director's Cut has both scenes in the movie as the plot progresses, and even has more than what we originally saw at the end of the credits. Ultimately it came down to runtime, and the cameos were just too non-important to leave in there
