awesome show!

I just finished watching this show start to finish online (Hulu, etc). It was sooo good! I wish it lasted longer. I wasn't aware of it when it was originally on the air, so I have a few questions like what network did it air on? Was it popular at the time? Why was it canceled? Did they know the 4th season would be the last while they were writing/filming it? I'm curious if the finale was intended to be a series finale or a season finale. It was such a smart, well-written and acted show, different from anything else I've seen on TV in tone, format, style - it was just so well-made. I'm glad I discovered it.
